Jake barking at everyone he sees

    Hello everyone!

Jake turned 2 in March and over the last few months he has started barking at just about every one he sees even if he knows them. The same goes with dogs that he has played with before etc. His hackers will be and and tail halfway between between his legs and let out that deep WOOOFFF WOOOFFFF. It doesn't seem to matter if he is in front of me or behind me or my family. Not sure if he is doing it thinking he is being protective. I walk him on a premier harness that straps around the front so I have good control of him.

What I would like to know is how can I stop him from barking at people because it does scare the crap out of people and I cant blame them.

    Thanks

Hi, Welcome to the Board. Sorry to hear about your problem with Jake. Don't want him scaring the crap out of people. Never had a barker before, so maybe this info can help?

Hopefully others who have had experience with their pups excessive barking can give you their experience. Good Luck.

Our Black Lab barks at most people as well. Usually if I have a handful of treats I can divert his attention so he stops barking.

Also, if I greet people with a warm friendly greeting he calms down. This seems to be the signal to him that all is well.

It sounds to me like he could be a "late bloomer" for his second fear phase (hackles up and tail between the legs = fear).

I've never had a dog react like this to people but the age of 2 is usually when reactivity occurs if it's going to be a problem....usually just with dogs not already known, though (I have that with Dan).

Thanks for all of the great info. I read the the tips and I believe its due to a couple of things. Fear of people getting too close to me and the family and wanting to speak. Just before I started typing this I was sitting in my office chair and he put his paw on the chair and looked at me saying hey pet please! Told him down and he put his paw down and is currently laying next to me as I type. See pic below So he has no problem expressing himself. I am going to try to deflect him with treats on our next walk as people walk bye and see how that works. If that doesn't do it then I will attempt to teach him to bark on cue.

Ok just got back and I am sure that dog either looked at my post or read my mind The deflect worked great. Even took him to the local pet store (guaranteed he would bark at someone there) and he was a quiet as a mouse. So quiet that the manager said how good he was behaving. Will keep at it and go from there.

    Thanks!
