Hmm, I call Luna and she looks at me, like "yea right" and then back to digging.....

She's just about 4 months, and she could care less when I call her. Is this normal? Also walking is really no fun, am I expecting too much from a puppy? She will heel great for a few minutes, then pull like crazy. Im using lead that is the rope style, and it tightens as she pulls. thank you for any advise.

Do you reward Luna when you call her and she does come to you. Also if you need to get closer to her and get her attention when she comes to you reward her.On the pulling. Stop in place or turn around. If you need to practice take one step at a time and reward the loose leash walking.

Id love to see a pic of Luna

ok I will try and get closer to her, and almost always reward with treat. I have done the stop when she pulls, but how long do I stop for? Someone told me until she sits. I will try the turn around thing tonight on our walk. I have also noticed she does not poop or pee on walks, and sometimes we are walking for an hour or so.... She can hold it!! I really enjoy walking her, I put on my tunes, and off we go. I did not walk Abbs like this, Im glad I'm finally doing it. Are you on instagram? My name is d_gilbert1975. #lunathetick :-D

Awww....she has a fondness for paper....

She's a cutie. Definitely do the stop/turn around when walking. That's worked for me every time.

Does she know she can get a longer walk with you if she holds her business? Sunnie won't go to the bathroom for me until we get into the park and have started back home. She knows she can hold out because I'm a walker. She'll poop and pee on our front lawn if Bob has her on the leash. Guess who's in charge of the short walks...good thing he doesn't mind bad weather and the dark.

    What a sweetheart puppy!

Have you considered a puppy obedience class?

She really seems quite normal for a 4 month old puppy...pulling on the leash is very common but takes some time and patience to get them to walk on a loose lead. I personally feel a harness is better, this way they are not choking their neck.

Do you use treats? When you call her, have a "high value" treat like cheese, or bologna, and always call her in a happy voice...make it fun!

    She's adorable!

As for your title, I was taught that's EXACTLY what you want. The dog is to look at you when you say her name, awaiting instruction. What instruction you give next could vary greatly. Come? Sit? Go left? Go right? Go back?

There are lots of tricks for teaching Heel. The one that worked best for Oban and I was changing direction but the sit one has helped lots too. We don't heel much though, that's more for formal situations or cramped quarters. For instance I want a Heel while walking down the nursing home aisles but on the way over to our off leash walking spot not pulling is fine, out in front of me is fine. Yes, sounds like a intro training class would be great, and they are fun, and they tend to be bonding experiences. She's a cutie.

Oh gosh, we haven't seen photos recently and I'd forgotten how adorable she is!

Somewhere I read that you should try having them go to the bathroom before heading out on your walk. The walk becomes the reward for going quickly and motivates them to go ahead and do it. So, whatever you do to get her to go when there isn't a walk involved, do that first. She's probably caught on that if you have certain gear with you or ask if she wants to go for a walk, it's time for a walk and she'll hold out on you. You have to be ready to take her back inside if she doesn't go and try again in 10 or 15 minutes. As with potty training, tell her Go Potty or Hurry Up while you're waiting and then praising her for going might help her learn that Hurry Up is her signal to go. Then as soon as she's done her thing, go ahead on your walk.

I'd suggest obedience classes as well. The trainer can help you select the best collar or lead. I have used slip leads in the past and choke chain collars but I haven't used those on my last few dogs since they can damage their throat/larynx/airway when the dog pulls or you give them a tug to correct an action. Plus, you have to be certain you've put them on so that they loosen up rather than stay tight after they've pulled or been corrected. The obedience trainers we've used for our last couple of dogs have preferred a pinch collar for dogs who pull like that until they learn not to pull, then switch to a flat collar that doesn't tighten up. I've done the reverse direction technique and it does help, but some dogs need a LOT of reverse direction at first and you might not even get to the end of the block the first few times. I don't really care if my dogs actually heel, I'm not doing obedience trials with them. I just want them not to pull on the lead like a draft horse so when I stop or change directions I first say, "No Pulling!" and turn around or change directions. Whether you want a heel or a loose lead for walking is your choice.

Just reiterating that calling her should never be punitive. If she's being naughty, like digging, you can give her a command to stop it (we use an "eh-eh" sound), and then go over and get her. Her name, and especially the word you use for recall (like "come") should be reserved for happy occasions. You want it to become 100% solid. That way when you use it in emergency situations, she'll listen!
