    Gun Dog Training

    Hello,

I am new to this forum so I'm not sure if this is already posted or not, but I'll give it a shot. I live in Toronto ON Canada and will be getting a lab in a few months. I am very interested in doing gun dog training with my dog. I'm not a hunter, but think this kind of training would be both fun and benificial for both me and the dog. I have been doing as much reading up on this and watching as many videos/DVD's as I can, but am having trouble finding any trainers or courses that could help me with this type of training.

Is there anyone that is aware of any training facilities or trainers who could aid in this type of training around Toronto? Any help would be great!

    Thanks!

Hi there and Welcome to the Forum!

I have a dog that I compete in Field Trials and do Hunt Test with and it has been a blast training my guy. For a great starter program thats really easy to follow I would suggest looking up Evan Graham's Smartworks. He sells dvd's but also posts a lot of videos on YouTube.

As for help in your local area I cannot help you there as I live on the opposite coast to you, but a good place to start is to look up your local Lab club. To help you find a club near you look at the National Retriever Club of Canada website and under the schedules you'll see a bunch of clubs listed. Find one close to you and contact them and they should be able to help steer you in the right direction.

    Good luck and have fun!

    Thanks for the input Buddy!!

That's basically where I have planned on getting started, so it's nice to know I'm on the right track.
It should be a fun and interesting training journey I am looking forward to!

    Hi, Welcome to the Board.

Congratulations on the new pup! Sounds like you have great plans ahead for both you and your pup. Wishing all the luck. Already were given excellent advise on moving forward to finding a group.

Hope you let us know how the journey goes! Plus would love to see pics of your new pup when he/she finally arrives home.

I think some people at the link I'll give you below might help you out. Some of them were on this board but this board was fried in a server malfunction a couple of weeks ago and we all had to re-join. I don't know if they have re-joined. Have fun and welcome.

Welcome! My boyfriend and I are training Bacon for both Waterfowl and Upland hunting. We are both avid hunters and Bacon comes from great hunting lines. These are the resources we have been using, along with extensive consultation with our breeder. We are located in MN, so I am not so knowledgeable about Canada.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9bKBr9Wfqc this is a youtube series on self training a hunting lab

We also are training with a Sport dog 825 collar https://www.cabelas.com/product/Sport...ar/1570489.uts it has been a great aid to our training. It comes with a great DVD to get you started. We started with an E collar at 6 months.

Wow, this is amazing. Thanks everyone.

i wished I would have checked this post earlier, I would have made the trip to the LOC Specialty this past weekend, but I will keep my eye out for another event I can attend hopefully with my new puppy to accompany me. Thanks for the info on that snowshoe.

BaconsMom, I actually already purchased that exact book and I think it will be a lot of help. Good to know I'm starting on the right track as I have never done this before. But I think it will be a great experience for both me and my girl and I'll be sure to post updates and I'm sure many more questions.

Thanks again everyone for all the great input!
