I would love to do a stack the rings game but Sunshine is not of that temperament. Not all labs are created equal. Not all labs are capable of being companion animals, some do fail.

My first two black girls could handle a delicate task, Sunshine, not so much. She is from hunting stock and has that drive and focus. For example, the stupid bunny toy on the dresser. My first labs would have done a sit, while staring at where it was. Couple minutes they would have barked or come to get me. Sunshine KNOWS it is up there and is going to get it, NOTHING is going to get in her way of achieving the goal. This doesn't mean she is destructive!... Anymore that is (it was an excess energy issue)... I just have to be careful where I 'hide' things. She still has all her original stuffed puppy toys (she is 3 now) and they all still have their plastic eyes and tags. She just lacks patience and composure.

She is VERY fast to learn names of things, and pick them out. Off leash outside, she is a pleasure, she is focused on ME, and what my next command will be. Inside, playing rainy day games, just as focused. It is not an "Oh, you want that? I'll go get it for you!". It is a "WHAT??? WHAT??? WHAT???" ZOOOOM!!!! I do not have to ask twice!!! LOL!

I'm just saying, not all labs are created equal. If your pup seems a little slow to catch on, don't worry keep at them. If yours is a little overanxious, well, bear with them.

Just an afterthought... We go to several lakes to swim and run off leash. At each one she picks out a "favorite stick". She will carry it with her wherever we go. Her choice is 4' or longer, 4" or better in diameter, we are talking BIG sticks. I also label different sticks on each trip. I will label one "the good stick" another "My favorite stick"... After I label one and throw it, it has that tag for the trip. She will go and get it by name. If we go the same spot two days in a row, I can label another stick "The good stick" and she will ignore the one from the day before. Just a thought for those with overactive labs to keep things interesting.

I really never tried to teach Cash the names of his toys, I just realized one day that he knew them. Every time we would play with one, I would say the time of it a few times. "Go get tire" "play ball?" "lets play with kong" etc. He catches on to names of new toys within a few days. Now it makes a fun game to play hide and seek, "find kong", "find ball", etc. It gives him a job and he loves it

Archie is making great strides. Have been working with his favorite toys. He sure knows is ball and wubba now. He's a little shaky on the elephant. Was playing fetch with him outside with the wubba and we came back in. Noticed he did not bring the wubba back in and told him to go outside and get it. To my delight, he did! Know what, this is as much fun for me as it is for him.

LOL, I know exactly what you mean. Weekends when I get up I get a cup of coffee and go out on the deck to drink it. Hemi always brings a toy. I have to remind him to bring it back in. But he is like, Oh yeah, runs and grabs it and brings it back in.

Excellent, congratulations! Now you can move on to the fun rainy day mind occupying games like hide and seek. Or my favorite, "I'm looking forrrrrrrr....." It is hard not to laugh as Sunshine sits at FULL attention! Waiting! "WHAT WHAT WHAT??? I COULD GET IT! WHAT IS IT???" Mention an object... ZOOM!!! LOL! Start out making things very easy to find, and as they get better hide them so they have to sniff for them.

I never tried to teach toy names but Sam does know ball and toy (generic use for any toy). He really knows ball best.
