Whenever I've taken or had dogs come in, I really try to establish what the rules are in my house, what the schedule is like in my house and I work fairly hard to establish trust. The shots, the vet visit, all combined may have just been too much in one day for him. That said, when you walk, I would turn back from your walk before he does. This way, you are deciding the route and when to go back. Or when I saw the change in body language where he is stating to freeze, I'd turn back, speed up to a quick walk/run and then turn back around and keep him going past where he was going to freeze. Lots of happy, higher toned praise as he jogs with you for a minute. Then turn around and head back home. I really want a walk to be enjoyable for a new dog and I do not want any freezing or scared behavior so if they exhibit it, I try various things to get them past that point. It sounds like he is doing fantastic otherwise. keep us updated on him. Sending good walking vibes!

Are you sure the pavement isn't too hot? It's been a hot summer. Also check his pads; they might be bruised depending upon what type of surface he was kenneled in.

I'm dealing with a dog with very sensitive pads; has from day one. But they are worse in the summer time.

Sounds to me like your boy is tired and insecure - that's a LOT to take in even in a weeks timeframe.

When I first adopted my late Malamute - she was just over a year old, but we were already her 4th family. She kept getting returned to the shelter - not sure why, because she turned out to be the best dog ever.

But for the first month, because she was so insecure with her surroundings, and afraid she was going to be taken from *home* again, I couldn't get her to leave the yard - literally.

My opinion - don't worry so much about walks right now; it's hot anyways...or at least here it still is (not complaining however). What I *would* be doing is taking him for car rides and getting out to socialize in different atmospheres - once he realizes going with you - or the family - is fun, he'll catch on.

What I mean by car rides, is find a trail, or a day area for a picnic.

But give him another week of feeling at *home* first.

    Treats

    Hi myndflyte,

Give him some treats while walking as a reward. As you walk along try to praise him, pat him, or anything that can boost his confidence. Maybe he is anxious that's why he would stop walking. Also if he has a toy, bring it along.

I hope this helps a little,
    jordan
