    Rally

So what exactly is Rally? One of our trainers suggested we take a Rally course but before I sign up for anything I'd like to know what it entails. Thanks!

It's Rally-O and the O stands for Obedience. It's a mixture of agility and obedience, more on the obedience when you start. It's bit "friendlier" than Obedience, you can talk to your dog as long as you don't chastise him, only encourage him. For the novice title your dog works on leash, then you go off leash for the rest. I've heard a lot of people say they prefer a, or a couple of, basic obedience classes first and by co-incidence that's what we did. But I've heard obedience people suggest Rally as a way to snap up their dog's heeling. One can benefit the other. Not sure if you can do the same type of things we have in Canada but there is a Working Level in CARO where you do stations with bits from Utility in Obedience and things that resemble field trial work, distance retrieving and moves that look like freestyle or other games.

Go to a class and watch first, always a good idea to see how the trainer works with the other dogs and how you think it will work for you two.

I don't find it at all like agility. There are jumps, which are low, but that's it, and only in the higher levels.

It's all based on basic obedience. You walk through a course and do what each sign tells you. Novice is on leash and gets harder with Advanced and even harder with Excellent.

Best thing to do, google Rally on youtube and watch someone running a course. Perfect Score at AKC Rally Novice Trial - YouTube

the above covers it. I enjoy it, a fun way to work on some basic obedience stuff (and not so basic!). It's meant to include agility things but only when you get to the top levels (which I haven't really done, I think I did 1 or 2 advance classes with Rocky but we didn't get very far).

You can just take a class for fun. Penny and I start beginner Rally-O next weekend. Rocky has his novice title but then it became harder to find classes and I lost my motivation

Hmm, I think I could do that with Maverick now. It looks like he knows the commands for it so far. He is currently in his fourth obedience class and he loves it. He especially loves all of his friends in class The first three were more puppy classes, but this one is more on obedience and working around other dogs.

I sat in on a class a couple weeks ago. It looks like fun, and I think it's another good way to bond with your dog. I'm signing Bruce up for a class starting in January.

Kanzi (now 8 mos) has already taken 2 Rally classes and earned her RN at 6mos and a few days old. Since I have done competition obed for years, I could do the basics at home but we needed the class for the distraction and signs, etc. I think it's an excellent way to start a young dog w/ more structured obedience. I used to do a puppy agility class, but this is the route I'm going to take from here on out I think. She's now in a Beg Nov/Novice comp obedience class and is doing as well as most of the older dogs.
