Love it!! I had intended to teach walking between my legs at some stage to be part of a free-style routine but NEVER thought I could use it in such a useful way. Wow, this would be brilliant when walking on narrow paths when you don't want your dog distracted by people/dogs passing by or just as you do, to give some control in crazy environments.

Aha, I was trying to come up with an easy command word that didn't sound like any of the others, "peekaboo" will suit perfectly.

Edited to add: I have started the walking between legs but my dog is very reluctant. It might be because I have taught her running through the legs which we do often so she is now not understanding that Instead of running through my legs I want her to stay between my legs and walk. This is going to take a little work.

When I taught Bobby "peekaboo," I marked and rewarded just for going under my legs. As a puppy, my sister and uncle liked to play "tunnel" with him and he would enthusiastically go through legs with a Kong in his mouth. Afterwards, I would hold a treat in front of his nose longer, luring him to stay for at least a second and I would mark and reward. Bobby is pretty food motivated like all Labs are so I just held a stinky treat in my fist as he nosed and sniffed it and walked with his head sticking out. Small steps at first and eventually, from the back of the lounge to the front.

For walking between my legs, Luna was skeptic at first. But we did walk one step, mark, sit, treat. One more, two more, etc.

On the topic of bow - I was able to get penny in position easily enough but she only does it when I put the treat down low tot he ground. I am working to be being ableto stand and then reward after. But having such a hard time getting her to bow without being down on the floor

Tips? just slowly keep working it to get the command (word) to click and slowly increase her duration?

I see. Just to clarify, it's kind of a wooden box which the dog stands on (I'm thinking the box Penny is on in Tanya's signature)? I tried googling it and could only find standing blocks.

    Keep the ideas coming!
Correct! They are painted and have our logos and stuff on them. The top is carpeted. They are hollow - we assemble them so they are easy to transport etc.

When we teach bow we use food nice and low to lure them into position - once they are there lots of praise and good bow good bow etc. Eventually once they understand what you are looking for, introduce a hand signal - my hand signal for bow is thumb and index finger in the shape of an L pointed at the floor at my waist. Your dog will get used to the position and gain strength and confidence to hold it the more you do it.

It took us some time before we could get good distance on it.

Wendy, my last black gal, did the sitting between my legs thing. It really is great for a crowd situation. There was no wondering where your dog was, just look down. She was a bit timid though, so did it all on her own. The only issue I remember was the tail being stepped on.

We worked on the sitting between my legs trick yesterday and we've got it down pat with a lure. It was pretty easy with him having learnt "peekaboo" beforehand. I'm just got to start adding a voice command and begin proofing it with distractions. I have no doubt that he will make attempts at breaking the stay when out and about, especially when people are around. Not sure whether I should add the "sit" portion as part of the same command or make a different one altogether.

What did you call this command?

    I use "place".

We've got it! Just have to start proofing and making it more reliable.
