Remember, those 5 minute sessions are only 'formal' training. You are actually 'training' her all the time!
I believe just having the pup out whenever I am home, and sharing day to day activities is also training. The more time I spend just having the pup with me, the more it learns about what expected behavior is. They are exposed to the routine day after day and learn to know what is expected of them. Except for the bathroom. I still can't figure that one out. One door, I go in the door, a while later I come out the same door. She has been in there, there is only ONE door! Why is there a NEED to follow me and stay right in the door watching me? I can go in any other room, no problems, he will be back.
Example: When I go into the kitchen, I announce this is the kitchen, I am going into the kitchen, dogs are not allowed in the kitchen. It is not a formal training session but she learns not to go into the kitchen. I am also a believer in learning through the school of hard knocks. I bring an item from the stove to the table and label it as "hot". She is going to touch it with her nose at some point and let up a YIP. I will reinforce the word, 'That is HOT.' Next item I label as HOT is going to get a lot more respect.
