My dude did this. I changed to a metal bowl for water. He won't pick that up. Like another suggested, perhaps ceramic is good, too.

Cassie used to "swim" in all water bowls, and then parade around with it, to the amusement and then annoyance of everyone at the dog park. Now, she no longer swims in her own bowl, but despite my diligent watching and correction, any other bowl of water is still irresistble.
When we go visiting, she will head for the resident dog's bowl and immediately splash it all over the kitchen floor and then lay in it happily, leaving our host with a WTF just happened look!
Reba just leaves a trail of water as she leaves her bowl!
What's not to love! LOL!

Breeze (4 months now) did that for a few days last week. Luckily her bowl is outside so not a big deal. We just ignored it and she seems to already have moved on from that and now just uses the bowl to drink from not to play with.
Angus will bring me his water bowl if it is less than half full. He used to play with the water until our neighbor gave us an extra kiddie pool. Now he can play in the water outside to his hearts content. He is currently learning how to blow bubbles.
Towels. That's what has worked the best. We use a bucket. (Not very glamorous, but it holds a lot.) Two of my three just drink normally.
Rocket dog sticks her entire face in the water, up to and sometimes over her eyes... blows bubbles, then laps up a ton of water, then dribble-drools it off her face and across the floor.
Towels.
