Yes, we start the minute they come home with little things like sit and coming when called. First we teach them their name though. Keep sessions very short (a couple minutes at a time) and fun - reward with some of the kibble from their meal, playtime, whatever they seem to like.

The minute they come home you start training. Like Annette said work on his name a lot, sit and come. Keep it short and fun. Your biggest job is potty training right now, out every 15 to 30 minutes and always out after any kind of activity such as sleeping, eating, playing

Agreed, from the first moment I pick them up!

Not all training needs to be formal training. Every time you interact with the pup is a learning opportunity. 'Come on , lets go into the living room to play!!! YEAH!!' 'Lets play with ToyA! YEAH, we are playing with ToyA!!' At this point, no, I do not expect them to know what a living room is or even what a ToyA is. But they are still learning! All of a sudden it will click that objects and places, like commands, have names!

Agree, now! Mostly going to be potty training, crate training, home manners to begin with.

You have had great advice here.
You are already training the dog just by your interactions with the pup. While it does not "appear" as formal training sessions, except for "potty training", the dog is bonding with you and learning. Use the pup's name often and keep the interactions fun, playful and interesting for the pup. Also, when you are teaching something, make sure that you are setting up for the pup's success. That is part of the reason for the frequent trips outside to go to the bathroom, so that pup doesn't make a mistake in the house. Should this occur, and it likely will on a few occassions, make sure that you have a cleaner that will remove the scent where the 'error" took place. There are many of these on the market and you need something specifically for pet cleanup and odor elimination. Otherwise, the pup will return to that spot and make the same mistake.

Best of success and congratulations regarding your new puppy.
