The only place I let mine off leash is at our country property, they know the area and their boundaries, and it is far away from the road.

Maverick just turned 1 in April. He has gone thru 6 puppy classes and he just started agility. It took until he was a year for me to even want to see what would happen. We take him to public parks in low-traffic residential areas. There is also an off-leash training area near us. We will drop the leash and we work on recalls in a minimally controlled environment, but he does great. If you want to try off-leash do so in an place that you can somewhat control and see what happens.

Mine are e-collar and whistle trained and they have parks not dog parks the run off leash at all the time. They know how far they are allowed to get from me I have no problems at all. I have taught them to ignore other people and dogs at the park, except for the couple we know. It is all about training and proofing it so they are reliable. I started them on a. 50' lead when they were puppies and then moved up to an e collar. It works for us for 3 years now.

Yes, I think we agree. I'm just so very anal about it. But the point is that it is not something to be done lightly and you want to be as recall trust-worthy as possible and pick the venue very carefully. And have your dog chipped if the next-to-worst thing happens.

My search and rescue dog is trained to basically live off leash under full control. I never just decide that one day, I'm going to trust the dog and let them off leash. With all the dogs I work with, for weeks, I use the leash as an umbilical from me to control the dog. I hold the snap in front of them. Teach them to follow the snap in a heel, multiple turns etc. They naturally will follow the snap on the leash. I start with just simple heeling, then I will start doing big sweeping turns, stops, starts etc. What you are teaching is that it is not okay to undo the leash and be free. Eventually, you will no longer need the leash, and then you can work on having a solid recall and introduction of "free" commands etc.

One question. How is her obedience *REALLY*? I've had 6mo pups off lead. However, it was a trained thing/ circumstance.

Windycanyon - She is very good usually, while on walks in the dog parks I have tried to just let go of the leash with her by my side. She doesn't try to take off but I just don't know if she notices that I have let go of it. I always pick it up quickly because of the fact that im worried she would may run. getting a long leash looks like the answer to slowly work at it.

Is it normal for her hair to stand up while seeing other dogs? I don't think she is doing it aggressively because she doesn't show teeth, but the hair goes up I don't know whether to pull her away or if I just let her sniff.

hair up means arousal. doesn't mean aggression, but means she is worked up. arousal can be due to exitement or anxiety it depends on the dog and situation.

how much socialisatino has she had with other dogs? if the dog is approaching calmly and nicely i'd let them greet. if it's a crazy puppy that coudl be frustrating and disconcerning to your puppy.

PULLING/Tugging on the leash could cause more problems though as it restricts the dogs even more adding prsesure on their neck (or shoulders if it's a harness) and THAT can cause issues.

What type of dog park is this? if it's an official dogs off leash park it can be intimidating (and not recommended) to have your dog on leash. it affects their body language and has them "in a corner" so to speak while other dogs are running around free. This coudl be why her hackle are raised (could be, obviously i don't know).

Jake is usually off leash most places we go (where it is allowed) but he knows he has to stay at close to my side. I would walk him in our yard and shake my left hand at my side and tell him to "stay close", he would come close to see what I wanted but after awhile he knew the hand shaking meant to heel and when I stop he sits and stops. Other wise he doesn't get too far from me anyway.
