The only crotch sniffer I've had was Hershey and even he wasn't that consistent (except with me after getting a mouthful of water).

I found that he was most interested in people who had dogs themselves. I got a chuckle out of the comment of one of my friends...and have used the comment myself ever since with other people's dogs...she said, "Is it me?".

Dan likes to stand against people and check pockets for toys/treats but he's never gone for a sniff other than that. "Leave it" and a gentle hand to his body somewhere is what works best for me.

Oliver is definitely a crotch sniffer and he is not gentle about it...anyway. When he does it I move his face away and say "you stop that!". Doesn't work. He attempts it twice no matter what I do and then he stops.

Funny story: The other day, Oliver was being annoying so I would turn my back to him to ignore him and get him to quit which just caused us to go in circles. He would come around to the front so I would turn away from him and on and on it went until he decided he had had enough of me ignoring him (or trying in this case) and he jammed his nose in my butt. Needless to say, he won that round as I gave up after that.

Ha! Yes, I frequently get the lap full of water as well.

So I just "tested" Archie, and he does a beautiful leave it when it comes to food. I can put treats on his paws, in my open palm, etc., and he won't touch them if I say "leave it." But for some reason he doesn't seem to correlate this command with not sniffing people. I think I'm going to have to wear a treat bag around the house more and work on the leave it command in other circumstances. I hope that if I have treats handy, I can quickly curtail his human greeting habit! (And if anyone has any other ideas for working "leave it," please let me know!)

My husband and I were romantic one night when we still had Nikko. Nikko goosed him. Now the dogs are not in our room at night. I think my husband is scarred for life. As far as crotches go, I think it's a fragrance the dogs love. A stern "ahah" usually works for us. That's our command for "you stop this instant because what you are doing or what you are going to do is not mom approved".
