    Discouraging the crotch sniff!

Sorry to be so indelicate, but man, Archie goes right for the crotch on most adults (and yes he is neutered). Partly it's his size -- it's pretty much where his nose is. But we had guests over yesterday that I didn't know well and it was embarrassing! We've trained him not to jump, so there must be a way to do this, but I have to admit I'm a little at a loss. Any tips?
    thanks,
    -e

What have you tried for the crotch sniffing? Is it people out at dog parks? In your house? Is it a drive-by thing or a full-on in their space sniff?

Leave it does the trick for me.

I've had the same problem with Wylie since he was that height. My problem is the he goes to my crotch a lot because since he was smaller, I would let him go between my legs and scratch his butt, which all our dogs in the house love. That's their sweet spot, right in front of the tail on top. It is embarrassing and I totally understand where you are coming from. Need to work on that myself.

I do like scratching his butt, but when I train him and he does well, he likes to go right between my legs for a butt scratch. LOL.

You can try leave it. Or treat/toy throwing. Just depends on the situation and when he is doing it.

It's people who come to our house, primarily. I have two kids and we have quite a few people in-and-out. It's only in the past few months that I've really noticed it (he'll be two at the end of May). I guess I get embarrassed that he's doing it, but then don't want to make a big deal by saying "leave it" repeatedly in front of another parent picking up their kid. Maybe I'll start by working on our "leave it"s in general. THat's one he's not proofed on. He never does it to me or DH, either, so I can't correct there. Hmmmm.....

Archie has been pretty good unless a lady who walks in during that time of month. He gets quite nosy, has a good sniff and then does not do it again during that visit. Maybe a guy thing?

A very stern "leave it" has always worked for me as well. My dogs seem to get it when they cross the line in to rudeness. I rarely have to use a stern tone but when I do it definitely stops them in their tracks.

Linus likes to wait until a woman is bent over to shove his nose up there. It's awful. At least now I know what he's going to do and can call him away. It's usually in private lessons when the trainer is moving equipment but it happened once during a match after he slid into a gate and the fake judge was trying to fix it. So embarrassing!

Must be a male thing, none of my gals has ever been a crotch sniffer.

I would start by nipping it in the bud. For my gals, in any social situation, when I clear my throat they stop and look. I then use head signs and discrete hand signs to get them to go somewhere else.
