Right before his surprise jump off the dock

I had a Lab, many years ago, that would not swim. She was fine splashing around and going in so far but she would never take off actually swimming. Only one over all these years, that isn't too bad, I guess.

Awwww! At least he does not seem to be doing a panicked swim back, it looks smooth. Hopefully he will become a water loving boy soon but be careful what you wish for! A water obsessed Lab can be a bit much sometimes. Keeping them out of water can become a battle of wills.

If you want to start again with water introduction from beginning, here is a video that can help. There are several tips to follow and it may be just what your dog needs to get him comfortable with water/swimming. Get the pup very excited about the stick before tossing it into the shallows. This excitement is what will overcome the hesitation. Video is from Ducks Unlimited dog training videos which you can find on-line.
Good luck.
Edit-- for some reason the video name changed to "obect moved" but if you click on that below, the video can still be viewed. Not sure what happened.

Big fan of the life vest. It helped Rio get over his fear of water and now he loves it. Still isnt a great swimmer, but loves being in the water with me.
Bacon learned by having both of us in the water. We stood in the water and had one of us have his favorite toy, then one of us released him in the water. He was freaked out at first, but then as we did it over and over again he loved it, it was a game! Now he is a pro!

Beautiful place for a swim!
When we were at the beach at the beginning of June, we had a hard time getting Frank to swim. He would wade into the water but wouldn't voluntarily swim. Sam loves to swim but even watching Sam didn't entice him. We know he can swim. One day there was an awesome tidal pool and a sand bar. Frank wandered out on the sand bar and swam through the tidal pool to get to shore. Sam and I were playing in the tidal pool. Could we get him to do it again? Nope!

We used TuMicks suggesting of a well-swimming dog with two young pups yesterday. sent the older dog for the dokken, young dog whined in the shallows and on shore. repeated 2x, and then the pup wanted to be the one to get it, so out she went chasing older dog, trying to grab the dokken. next time, held back the adult, and let her go herself. she's got it now.
little more hilarious to watch the 2.5yr old go in for the 1st time. he had no hesitation, but his swimming style, at best, could be called a splashy dog paddle! he'll get smoother the more he does it.
My prior chocolate lab was very similar to Thor. The final kicker to get her into swimming was my jumping in and "hiding" under water. She would have gone through fire to get to me. She jumped in and swam to look for me. She learned to swim and fetch but every Spring we went through the same ritual of getting her used to it all over again.
