We did a full obedience course which involved the trainer, other dogs and their owners which is when his shyness became apparent. I also observed last week when Sara one of the day care staff brought him out and walked him through people that he was fine, I had our other dog, Stella so I may be 'sending stress' down the leash or he may think he needs to protect me. I really can't say enough about finding a trainer who knows what they're doing and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I think finding a good trainer is a great idea. This way you can find out what's really going on and how to address it correctly. Make sure you find a trainer who does not punish the dog for barking as it will just make it worse.
