His age is ideal for training recall using my method. I call it the Fear of Losing Mom method. It's simple, at that age they are usually fearful of being too far from your side. When they get too far for their little comfort zones and come running back to you call out your recall word. This is exactly the same way you potty train, name the action, praise the action, pretty soon they know COME. You don't even need treats for this because puppy's reward is his feeling of relief at being back safely by your side. You can treat if you want though. You can hide behind a corner or a bush to increase your chances of him performing the action you want. My pups were reliable on COME in two weeks on this method. This is a popular method in the UK as per the link.

    Puppy off lead

Note the caveats: Safe place is paramount. After 16 weeks they are probably not so afraid of venturing out on their own and it likely won't work then. Just you and puppy, no other dogs or people.

You have definitely come to the right place! Molly was about the same age as Tucker when I joined this board and I have learned SO much!! Unfortunately, it was lost in the crash, so keep asking questions for future new puppy parents.

As for training, we have only done the puppy class so far at PetSmart. I would recommend it. We had been in the store about 2 weeks before we picked up Molly, and were just talking to the trainer. She gave us lots of tips beforehand, and she seemed like she really knew her stuff. We made sure we signed up for one of her classes and so far so good. We are signed up for her to do intermediate training as well. If we have questions about anything she's willing to talk before or after class. The only thing I would like to change about their training is not having puppy play time.

We found a good program and trainer from the AKC website STAR Puppy Program.

Found a great place to go from suggestions here and from the breeder. Second on what kelsyg suggested, or even look up a Labrador club in your area. Definitely will get some good feedback from either AKC or the club.
