I've specifically wanted color AND sex, but you can still screen breeders full on their breeding program (clearances and what they do with their dogs) so don't think it's wrong to WANT something specific. But be aware that you should not forgo clearances and looking for a REPUTABLE breeder because of not being willing to wait for the opportunity to get what you want.

You should expect to train him like any other dog that marking inside the house is not allowed, and redirect him to places outside where he's allowed to do so. I hope that your breeder, or the trainer you purchased your dog from, will mentor you and support you through your chosen training path. I also really hope that this male you are getting will be cleared for all heritable diseases before being bred.

Oh boy is right. You need to work w/ your breeder on this one. I for one would not put that on an inexperienced pet home personally. If I have a "pick" male I want to place w/ breeding rights, it's always to an experienced home who I know I can work with.

Thanks for all of theadvice and help..... Shamus the cream colored lab from poland will be coming to my house to become a part of our family. As long as his swab test for inheritable diseases comes back clean.... are very happy. We have met him twice and I have never met a more chill 5month old puppy of any breed. He is cool as can be. Knows sit ....stay.... down.... walks well on a leash too. Opened umbrellas in front of him and had him play in a babypool of empty water bottles so loud but it didn't phase him....SO NOW FOR MORE ADVICE ON KEEPING HIM FROM MARKING. ... The owner/trainer says he will not mark more than once as long as we stay on him about it. The worry for us is that our deceased rescue pug Otis did Mark in our house on occasion ...but he passed over a year ago. We obviously cleaned it up well and we cant smell it but will the new pup? What would you experts recommend to make sure that the odor is out of the carpets?

I've had 3 intact males over the past 30, including Bruce who is just over 19 months old. Once house trained I've never had any sort of issue marking in the house. Bruce will lift his leg and mark when we are on our normal walks. I've been working very hard with him training him to go when I tell him to, and when I tell him not to. During out walking I'll let him pee on anything that horizontal without direction or intervention. I only allow him to mark a vertical surface when I say it's ok. A stern "leave it" and he will avoid the item he wanted to mark. Once or twice during our walk, I'll tell him "go pee" as we approach a mailbox or light post, and let him mark it.

It's been my experience that dealing with an intact male is not any different than dealing with any other dog. It's just a matter of you teaching them right and wrong.

I have never had an issue with marking from an intact or neutered male. As long as you teach them where and when it is acceptable behavior you shouldn't either. If you did not thoroughly clean prior soiled areas with a Natures Miracle it would be a really good idea to do so now. Normal household cleaners will not do the trick, you need an enzymatic product to help eliminate the odor a dog can still smell.

Best of luck with your new puppy, I hope everything works out!

My boy is 8 years old and intact, my second intact male. I agree with all above but I did find it's sort of that you have to potty (pee) train the boys twice. First you teach them which horizontal surfaces are ok. Grass yes, carpet no. Then they start leglfting (8 months for Oban) and you have to teach them which vertical surfaces are ok, trees yes, people legs no.

You do have to watch all of them in places where other dogs have peed, even some girls. Like that outside corner on my Vet's counter. The girls can't target the vertical so they pee on the floor beside it. "But Mum," they'll look at you and say, "All the other dogs are doing it here."
