A trainer can watch you and how you handle the dog offering excellent training ideas. I am working with a trainer now and what a difference...much more accomplished. We meet at different places to socialize my dog. Yes it costs more but I am getting much more out of 4 lessons than I would get from 8 weeks of classes and would probably have to take the class again. There are many good trainers and prices will vary. You can schedule at your convenience. On the other hand there are some great training clubs also. Try it both ways and see what works better for your needs. Hope this helps some!
I could never do a class with 10 dogs. I find 8 too much (though 8 with a teacher and aids to keep things going can work I guess). I like 4-6 dogs (I have done many obedience classes with 4-6 people - one trainer)

The type of training you do depends on your expectations. Everyone has different expectations. For example, there are a lot of people that don't really care if they say "sit" and the dog doesn't sit...they just shrug and say my dog is stubborn and laugh about it. Others want to say "sit" and have the dog stop and sit immediately. It all depends on exceptions. Some people would look at my dogs training regime and think I am a lunatic. Some people want to spend 30 minutes a day working with their dog. Some people want to spend all day working with their dog. It all comes down to expectations.
