Abby sounds like a very smart girl that was just waiting for someone to love her and take the time to work with and teach her. Dogs are never too old to learn, that is simply nonsense!

Worked with her some this afternoon on recall. Those were the two big things she really needs to learn. I wouldn't trust her off-leash yet. She did really well with some recall training today. Can't get over how smart she is and how she wants to please. Too bad she has never had anyone to take an interest and teach her some basic obedience.
They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Well, Abby is 2 and is amazing at learning new things. I guess that's not old in dog years. She's just a "teenager"... and we raised 3 of those.
The link below is how I got a really good recall on a whistle, which now also works on verbal and hand signal. Long lines are favoured by many but we tried and tried and tried and it just didn't work. For close work a clicker and food treat were good markers and rewards but outside throwing the ball trumps all other rewards for my dog. And outside at a distance the clicker can't be heard well, though I love the clicker.
