I think you're just giving this lip service. You have a responsibility to protect your dog from potential danger. You are not doing that. Your dog should be able to trust that you have his back and will not expose him to unnecessary danger.
My opinion is that you are putting your needs ahead of your dog's. You don't want to upset your business and friend relationship. Grow a backbone. You've already seen just how quickly it can go south. Something that could be much, much worse for your dog is entirely foreseeable, and you have a duty to NOT let it happen.
