I don’t know about for field work particularly, but we train our competition Obedience pups to go to a particular mat (thin bed) and stay there. We can then bring the mat with us to new places and it gives them a designated spot to hang out on while not working. We usually crate them if we are leaving them alone, but for example if doing a ring rental with several dogs and you just want to switch out, or if you are hanging out ringside waiting your turn to go in and the crating area is too far away. Also useful if you are visiting family/friends and don’t want them mooching from the table as it provides a familiar spot for them to stay in.

Well the DVD/book I watched is for huntin dogs and place is a command for the dog to go to a dog stand away from the hunters but place to him is get on something. So when I start baseball should i use a placemat/ platform or a steak in the ground I plan on using him for hunting and hunt test not gonna get into the field trials unless he turns out flawless his genetics/blood line is straight field trials high energy and drive like crazy

There are a ton of useful applications for PLACE. When I'm in the field (doing marks alone) I use a 1' by 1' piece of rubber mat. But that PLACE command is also really useful around the house when the dog is underfoot. (My hubby ends up with "Git. OUT. Of. My. WAY!!!!" I told him I never taught her that command. I just to her to SIT, DOWN, COME, and PLACE. But it's easier teaching the dog than the husband.)

But this is a video a guy posted on the web of doing stand-alone singles with a send-back. Very useful.
