New Member with a question about the coat

    Hello everyone!

I'm new here and had a question or two about my dog's coat. Two weeks ago I adopted my new dog Bear he's a black Labrador Retiever, about 3 years old and literally cares about nothing in this world (basically he's super mellow). Well he started itching a couple days after I got him home and he kept scratching then started shedding BAD! I noticed this weekend that he has scratched himself to the point of bleeding so today I got him in the car and went to the vet. Turns out he has mites (the poor fella), so the doc gave me some medicine in a syringe (without the needle) that was yellow, a big bottle of medicated shampoo, this nasty stuff in a bottle that smells like sulfur. The vet proceeded to tell me if I really want this medicine to work I really should shave my dog's coat all the way down to the skin , well I went ahead and did it (figured the vet wouldn't steer me to wrong) and proceed to take a bath in shampoo and sulfur medicine with Bear (not by choice haha). He is actually already doing better already by he's demeanor and everything, but I live in Puerto Rico it never gets hotter than 85, never gets colder than 72, and is always sunny and blue skys, I would like to know about his coat.
How long will it take to come back? Will it be just as good as it was before I shaved him or different? He's purely an outside dog, but should I bring him inside during the day to protect him from the sun and sunburn? Will it still offer the same protection from heat and cold once it does grow back?

I hope I'm in the right forum because no one can tell me exactly what breed he is. He basically looks like a Black version of a Golden Retiever. Long hair and two coats, but the vet said he's called a Labrador Retiever but that seems...odd.

Please correct if I'm wrong but I could still use some info.

    Thank you,
    Bryce

Hello! While I am normally against shaving labs we had to shave our girl Daisy down for medical reasons in July. It has just recently filled back in to the point where it is just barely noticeable, and there are still some patches on the side that are still short and haven't grown back yet. Based on our experience I would say it will be about 6 months.

    Hello and Welcome!

Like Arentspowell, I would never shave a lab unless there is a medical reason to do so. While a lab's coat is thick, it acts as protection against cold and heat. I've had black labs who loved laying out in the sun on a hot day where their coat was hot on the top but cool by the skin.

Labs love to be with their family. I do strongly suggest you bring your pup inside. Especially, since the protective coat is gone, for health reasons and to prevent heat related problems. I believe you two will bond better and create a fantastic relationship. They want to be a family member and in IHO should be.

Labs can carry a long hair gene and have longer fur. Or, maybe Bear does have another breed mixed in.

    Would love to see pictures.

My boy had a form of alopecia that caused his guard hairs to fall out but not his innner coat. The outer coat was not completely back in to it's full length till over a year later.

Bear does look like a mix. Maybe Lab and Golden Retriever? Two of the nicest dog breeds you could possibly have making Bear a doubly nice dog.

Yeah I was thinking he was a mix haha but sadly I just can't let him inside because now that he has no fur his scratches make him bleed...which melts my heart because he is just a wonderful loving dog.

That's probably more of a reason to bring him in!

Daisy was shaved because she developed a nasty skin infection all along her back. She would scratch and it would bleed. I took an old T-shirt and tied it in a knot around her belly.

Well I tried your technique and Bear doesn't move haha not at all. The first time I tried he didn't move for atleast 30 minutes! He has gotten two weeks worth of sulfur and meds and he is doing better! The vet was surprised how fast his coat is coming back already, the bit of hair that has I'd already 1/4 inch long!
