6 weeks is too young for a puppy to be taken from it's mother In most states it's illegal to sell a puppy before 8 weeks of age.

    Hello and Welcome!

Do agree, it is too young. Ohio does have a law stating that it is illegal to sell a dog younger than 8 weeks. The pup needs those last few weeks for important socialization and bit inhibition learning with it's litter mates.

Hi and welcome! I agree that six weeks is really young, in most states/countries the usual age for the puppy to be picked up is eight weeks, but to be honest I got Mel when she was also six weeks old. Knowing only the theory of the difference and possible problems, I can't compare these two (6 vs. 8 weeks old) and I believe that the people here with long years of experience with labs know what they're talking about. Somewhere, however, it seems to be usual and I must say that it is manageable, although it probably requires a lot more time and care. Congratulations and good luck!

Yes, the puppy should be staying with the mom and litter for 2 more weeks. That's an important socialization time...they also learn bite inhibition at this stage. Chances are the breeder isn't going to care, which is why they are dumping the pups so early. Some breeders even keep puppies LONGER. Typcially, for a breeder the last 2 weeks from 6-8 weeks are the hardest. YOU have to feed them, clean them up, deal with their play fights...

Hi and welcome! Hopefully your breeder us willing to keep the puppies with mom for another 2 weeks, it really is very important.

My husband and I are picking up our puppy tomorrow. She will be almost 6 weeks. Thanks for the tips!
Oh dear. I see in your comment on the other thread that she isn't even 6 weeks yet. How old will she be, exactly? I hope you can get the breeder to keep all of them another two weeks. Good luck with this.

    Hello & welcome
I agree with others - it's way too early to take the pup form mother & siblings.

Is it breeder or "breeder" that you're taking that dog from? Do you know if parents have any health tests done, will the puppies be registered, what age are the parents?
