    Is he a purebred lab?

    Hi,
I just joined the lab forum today. My puppy is now 5 months old. I got him off Craigslist and they said he was a purebred but im becoming suspicious. He has ears and a bark like a hound. what do you guys think? he is a big old lovebug and is extremely social and smart.

who knows. If you got an AKC pedigree, probably is. if you didn't get papers, it's possible. Unfortunately, there are so many variations of what Labradors look like, and lots of people breeding them willy nilly....Just enjoy the dog.

What a cutey congrats welcome to the board.

Agree with the above. Labs are the most overbred breed out there and many people are just breeding two "labs" who, while they may be pure bred, may not have the temperment or look a lab "should" have. It has lead to a huge variation on how a lab "looks" and some of their characteristics (i.e. temperament).

Pure bred doesn't mean well bred (meaning healthy or of "labrador temperment". It takes effort and work to breed lines that are true to the look and temperment of a lab not just putting two dogs together. So basically your dog could well be purebred just with some less than labby characteristics as the breeder wasn't breeding to produce nice healthy, good temperment labs. Just bred to breed (or heck might have been an oops).

I'd also mention that at your pup's age, 5 months, some dogs seem like their legs are growing longer than they should, their ears are funny, their heads are too big or too little for their body. They don't all grow perfectly evenly so once he gets to be an adult, he may look more proportional. I'm no expert on conformation but I've seen many people mention how funny different parts of their pup's body seem while they're still growing.

I like his ol' wink in your first photo!

All I can say is that he'll grow into his ears for sure!

That second picture made me think "Billy" https://www.google.com/search?q=dog+...&bih=963#spf=1

But there's a real good chance he's a purebred Lab....as mentioned above, they go through some pretty gawky stages where body parts don't seem to match up.

Welcome to the board. What's your boy's name?

Looks like a lab to me. Field labs (ahem... you'll notice the face in the avatar) frequently have longish ears.

Had to google, never heard of that breed before. Attractive age span they have.

You can get a DNA test for about $70 if it's worth that much to you to know for sure. Go to Amazon and type in Dog DNA test; Mars candy company has a division that handles this.
