Welcome! No advice, but thank you for adopting this little guy!
Hello, everyone. I am have adopted a puppy who was born blind. I am picking little Seymour up this Sunday. I used this forum when I got my first lab a little over five years ago, and found it immensely helpful in overcoming many of the trials that come along when bringing a pup into the home.
I am hoping that someone out there can offer any helpful hints and/or tips for raising and training a blind puppy. Does anyone have any insight? I don't necessarily have any specific questions right now, just any general information would be appreciated. I am sure that once he is here in a few days the specific questions will come pouring out.
Thanks so much

What a loving endeavor! Do you still have an older lab, the 5+ year old one? We had one dog who went blind due to a genetic eye issue, he wasn't born blind, but we had a second dog who he followed around and when he stayed with the breeder, he would follow her other dogs. It was hard to tell he couldn't see. One thing I'd mention is that the pup will learn where the furniture etc is located and once they learn their environment, it can be hard on them if you relocate furniture and items they know about. I've also read some people help train blind pups by having scent markers around so the pup learns their way around by scent. I don't know any more about it than that, our dog was older when his sight was finally gone and he knew his way around already. Please keep us informed on how the puppy does!
How fantastic of you!! Please share stories of this little guy so we can enjoy!!

Thank you!! Yes, I still have Ubu. He is a 51/2 year old chocolate and is absolutely amazing in every way! I actually give this site and it's members a lot of credit for all of their wonderful advice and insight when he was just a puppy and I was training him. I will definitely keep everyone posted on our adventures. I will post a picture of the two when I bring him home on Sunday. I'm sure I will have plenty of questions along the way

How awesome of you! The only thing I know about blind puppies is from a vet tech who fostered one. He found a local trainer who had worked with blind dogs. They used some kind of collar that, I think, vibrated on the right and left sides to help with training.

Interesting!! I haven't come across that yet. I'll look into a vibrating collar. Thank you!!!
No advice. I've had a dog become deaf but never had to contend with blindness.
Congratulations on your new addition and all good thoughts for your puppy and his training. I do think having your older dog will be a big benefit.
