    Lab rescued from the street

A few nights ago walking home I found this cute little puppy that had been thrown out on the curb in a box (rather common here in Ecuador). The wife insisted we take him home temporarily until we can find a new home for him. We checked with a few local animal foundations and they at maximum capacity, not accepting taking in any new animals. We are thinking about it and are looking for some info advice as to best care for him and have a few questions. While I have had dogs before, including a lab mix, this is my first time taking care of a puppy. He is able to eat dry food that has been softened up with water.

I have a couple of questions in order to best care for him.

    1. Is he a pure lab, or lab mix and approximately how old? We were told by the vet at the foundation (Protección Animal Ecuador) that he was approximately 4 weeks, that was as of early this week.

    2. When (and what) vaccinations should he be given?

    3. How many times should we feed him and what is the best way to potty train him? He seems to be doing reasonably well going to the bathroom on newspapers although accidents still happen.

    4. Likewise, any other tips or suggestions would be appreciated

So, so cute! Since you found him on the street, you won't know what his background is. I'd suggest you find a veterinarian to take him to as soon as you can who can advise you on vaccinations, see if he needs to have deworming medicine, try to estimate his age, that sort of thing. I can't tell how much white he has on him but I see some white toes and toenails and maybe some white on his chest, so my guess would be he's not a purebred lab, even though he looks a lot like a lab puppy looks. Thanks for bringing him in and trying to help him get a better start, he's very cute.

You should take him to the veterinarian right away, for sure!

What a sweet little guy. Thank you for taking him in...he's lucky you're looking out for him, especially since he's so young.

I agree with everyone else...please have him seen by a vet. That's the best place to get answers to your questions...the vet will be able to evaluate him and provide the best specific information for him.

Welcome to the board. Let us know what the vet says and we'll be more able to help you as the little guy grows.

Four weeks is young. Very very young for a pup away from it's mother and siblings. Don't expect too much with potty training at this point (i.e., "accidents"). It's pretty much all "accidents" at this age...slow but sure for him to know where you want him to go. And don't expect him to hold anything in for long periods. If you want to start with him going outside to potty, take him out after every meal, after every play session, when he wakes up, etc.

This link should help you...but be aware that this is geared toward a pup a bit older than yours already (most people do not get puppies as young as yours and breeders would be taking care of them in a litter situation):

Thank you so much for saving this little sweetie!

Like the others, he needs to be seen by a vet to get him set up on vaccination routine, general check, worming, etc. Puppies this young are physically unable to hold their bladder for very long, muscles need to strengthen. As he matures he will do better so be patient.

    Please do keep us updated.

There are some breeders on the board, maybe not tonight, but not as many people come on the board on weekends. They should be able to help out with the usual schedule for vaccines and feeding schedules for a puppy that age. I'm thinking if he's just about 4 weeks old, he probably needs to be fed about 4 times a day. By 8 weeks, my puppies have come to me eating 3 meals per day. I missed reading your post initially that a vet told you he's about 4 weeks old. Did the vet not give you any more information about vaccines or other questions you might have?

Poor wee mite, how lucky for him that you and your wife happened along. I bet you will end up thinking it's the two of you who are lucky, he's a cutie-pie.

I am so glad you're able to give this little guy a chance. Yes, they don't have the ability to control their bladders at this age. Add to that the fact that their kidneys are immature and cannot concentrate urine. Maybe someone here will correct me, but my understanding is that all puppies need to be wormed. Even well cared for litters from healthy dams. Thanks for caring for him/her.

Thanks for all the responses. As for taking him to the vet, they said he was too young for the injections and were advised to return in a week to ten days. We plan on giving him the appropriate treatments (vaccines). They gave him a pill for deworming? and advised us to check his poop to see if he passes any the next couple of days. I am also thinking he may have fleas, as he seems to scratching a lot, and likely probably have passed a few to me as well.

What (if any) treatments can you give a ~5 week old puppy for fleas?
