Welcome to the board. You'll find it's populated by some of the friendliest, most helpful, most supportive (and sometimes opinionated) people around. Find two lab owners and they'll give you three opposing opinions on any lab-related topic you can think of.

I am crazy about my rip-snorting, high-drive Field-Champion-Pedigree-out-the-whahzoo lab who is snoring at my feet as I type. Around the house, she's completely laid back. When there is something to do... she has all the enthusiasm you could want and then some. I love that kind of dog.

What my dog has taught me is that drive and enthusiasm is not hard-headedness. (A very common misunderstanding). She is very quick to learn and eager to please. I highly recommend a dog like mine. Except that she does sorta look like a lab/hound cross. I'm gonna say it before someone else does. Her looks would make the Show judges wet themselves they'd be laughing so hard. However, before you conclude that great Field labs are necessarily ugly, check out some of the super photo's IrishWhistler has of his dog Trad and his young pup Max.

Now I'll make a pitch for the Retriever Field Sports (because that's kinda my thing.)

I'm retired too. Ain't it grand? I don't hunt, because if it's moving, I can't hit it. But I love the out of doors and training/competing my dog. Why this sport? Because it reaches deep into the primal genetic code of every Labrador, and it turns them on and lights up something inside them. It's a wonder to see. Don't make the assumption that you won't want to do any of the Hunting Retriever stuff. You might want to go to a hunt test and watch a bunch of dogs run. It's amazing what they can do.

But whether or not it's the field sports, by all means decide to do some specific thing with your dog. A puppy obedience class is foundational for anything else. Labs are smart and they yearn to learn new things. Determine to do things with your dog.

You've gotten a lot of good advice here but I'll add that several of the RCLRC members are members of PSLRA (puget sound) as well, so if you need to broaden your search a bit more, look up the PSLRA Breeders List too. PSLRA Breeder Directory | Puget Sound Labrador Retriever Association

    Good luck! Anne

Thanks to all that have chimed in. In looking over this thread again it’s got a lot of good info in it.

I’m a few days out now from going to the Rose City Labrador Club’s Specialty meet. I think you guys can help guide me. It’s Thursday thru Saturday from 7am (really ?) to 8pm. I can’t go on the Friday.

Should I go on Saturday or will it be winding down? Is there a better time (than 7am! ;-) to be sure to be there? I assume morning is a lot better.

If anyone here will be there, let me know if you would, how to introduce myself.

Have you found the premium/ schedule online? https://www.barayevents.com/docs/1285/document_5103.pdf IMO, I'd go Thurs so you can see more from both the bitches and dogs (if you are interested in the conformation part esp).

No, judging won't start til 8am. I have gone years ago, but not recently. I can put you in touch w/ some friends going if you want to pm me. Anne

Thanks Anne, I had not found that! Has pretty good detail.

I did think Thursday would be best. My wife wants to go but can’t Thursday. Maybe I’ll go Thursday and take her Saturday.

I should just walk up to folks and say hi! I know I’d love that if the roles were reversed!

    Hi all

Just a (tardy) update from the RCLRC show at Champoeg.

We went Saturday ~9 and spent 3 hrs or so there. Visited with a few very informative and friendly folks. Thanks much if it was you!

There was a LOT going on. Lots of people, lots of puppies (we were there early so saw the puppy events). We both had a really good time and I was pleasantly surprised by how into it my wife was. She asked a lot of questions, tried to figure out who was who and what was what. There's a lot of subtleties to catch onto if your a newbie...

We have made a few decisions. Rio, our prior lab was yellow/white and so we are leaning that way but every single dog was amazingly beautiful. Not a clinker in the bunch. But I guess that's why they were there :-)

My wife decided that the 'Field' style lab is her preference by a wide margin. I think those 'Bench' style stubby legs reminded her of her own

We have not selected a breeder yet. We set a loose time-frame of the first of the year so we have time (right?).

tee heee on the wife! That said, keep in mind that there are some nice "tweeners" out there too that are more moderate in bone and coat.
Do you have a preference on adult size/ weight? There is a huge range in field breedings right now from very small to very large (though I'm not seeing as many big 100+ lb ones these days like I did 25 yrs ago). Most will be no more than 80# now.
