We all had to sign back up after the crash. Welcome back!
Hello all,
I first joined and introduced myself last Fall, but that seems to be gone now.
Anyways, I'm in Central Illinois and had a Lab growing up (and an ornery Beagle). Then my husband and I had a Lab (he'd had before we started dating) and we lost her March 2013 to Lymphoma. We finally decided last Fall we were ready for another puppy. We wanted a Field Lab. I did the research and settled on the breeder. Waited for the bitch to come in heat, get bred, etc. and then at her ultrasound it was found she was not pregnant.
Got a referral to another breeder who happened to have a littler of 5 black females (which is exactly what we wanted). Went down to Southern IL and picked up Hailey in March. She has been an absolute joy. Incredibly smart and easy to train (except for "Off" - we're still struggling with politely greeting new people, lol). We are in basic obedience and my novice self has started training her for duck hunting. I would love to put a Junior and maybe even a Senior Hunter title on her. So mostly I'll be here looking for training advice. Emailed a "local" club about joining so I could get more support that way, but haven't heard back yet.
I am sure all Labs are smart, but Hailey always amazes me. She house broke so quickly, at 5 months she trustworthy alone in the house for several hours if necessary (though she's with me almost 24/7). My in-laws have a year old "bench" bred Lab and the difference is fascinating. Love their dog too (she's family) but while she likes to chase balls/frisbees, she doesn't bring them back, she doesn't like to swim, she has no interest in birds...all things that Hailey seems to do instinctively. I just find the role genetics plays very interesting.

Hello, she is so pretty.
Glad your girl is doing outstanding in training and the field. Genetics in breeding is very interesting. Of course, not all bench bred Labs are like your in-laws' dog. Many Labs from show lines, including those of people who are members of this board, have achieved the JH, SH, or MH titles. :-)
Hi and welcome back. It was fun to read your updates.
Hello and welcome back
Yes, I know in most anything (horses, dogs, etc) its about the individuals, and I know Labs a whole as a retrieving breed have those natural inclinations. I certainly didn't mean to imply anything against bench bred Labs. And I use "bench" bred loosely for my in-laws' dog. I know she's not field bred, but I don't know that she was bred specifically for show either. I'm not familiar with the kennel she came out of. She is just of the shorter/stockier variety.
And I had not realized the forum crashed. I'd kind of gotten occupied with other things and hadn't checked in for quite a while, so couldn't figure out why I couldn't log in at first.
