The breeders on this board would have the expertise, but in the meantime, I'd say the truth lies in his parentage. But if we're going by looks, I'd guess he's a mix of the two. In the standing photo, he looks taller than your average English/bench lab, but seated, his chest looks English/bench.

    He's sure cute, though.

It's more about the pedigree than the looks.
Labs either come from show lines, hunt lines or pet lines. A combination of two styles is typical of breeders who don't breed for any other purpose than to supply puppies to families.

Funny/not funny story: I asked one breeder if her dogs were English or American. She said, "Well, the sire used to be really skinny but he's put on weight as he got older, so I guess he started American but is now English." I backed away very quickly from THAT opportunity!

Hahaahaaaa!!!!! I always tell people you can tell the English ones by their accent.

May I ask why is it so important for labels these days? HOw about he's a Labrador?

And btw, there used to never be these discussions about show / English/ bench vs field/American years ago. Blends were normal (and I still do the occasional breeding back to field dogs so Jen, I take exception to your comment above as I do breed w/ a purpose/ goal in mind!).

Hiwood Shadow was ?he last Dual CH of the breed. Born in 1979. Labrador retriever Pedigree of DUAL CH AFC Hiwood Shadow My first girl was a decendent from Hiwood Piper, his sire. Obviously nice looking dogs if he was good enough to be a CH. Several of my good friends also started out w/ dual lines. It's not a bad thing.

Ann, you are the exception, you also work all the dogs and probably a good portion of your buyers also work their pups from you.

And ruffled feathers aside, you know the type of breeder I am talking about...1 FC somewhere in the pedigree 6 generations back, 1 CH in the pedigree 5 generations back, and basically the breeder is a glorified puppy mill. We all know that's not YOU!

Mine has great-great-grandparents from Britain and France, does he count as half-British, half-French? LOL

I bet all Labs are Canadian

Because while the original dogs were from Canada, the breed was developed and the foundations set in England.
