Advice needed on 4 month old male who greets people with peeing.

We got Jackson when he was 9 weeks and all rolled as it should. Then at 11+ weeks any one who came to visit or we went to visit he begins to pee. I've asked the trainer I'm working with and my vet and they say it is submissive peeing. My question is, is there anything I can do to get him to stop. He's 4 months now and still doing it. I take him out in the drive way to meet any new people and am exceedingly cautious about bringing him back in because he still tinkles. Once he's used to the new person or people being here he's great! My two other labs never did this. Thanks for any advice!

My experience is that most puppies (and it's usually females) outgrow this.

That said, I have a friend who always had to take her Golden Retriever (also female) outside whenever company arrived...the dog was fine after initial introductions. This went on for the lifetime of the dog.

So...I guess I'm saying "wait and see". Good luck. Welcome to the board!

And...honestly, there's worse things in the world than having your shoes peed on by a puppy. Been there, done that...cleaned up the shoes. Oh, well....

My previous girl did this and she did outgrow it. Can’t remember how old she was when she outgrew it, but she was probably about 1.5 to 2 years old.

I've been fortunate that none of mine, male and female, have had more than an episode or 2 of what might have been submissive urination before it stopped. Some people make a distinction between excitement and submissive urination but the approach appears to be similar. I tried hard never to make the puppy think I was in any sense upset with them both for this type urination and other accidents in the house. When our 5 month old bullmastiff puppy was still peeing in the house, now that was a hard time to practice my own self-control but he finally got it right. I saw in another thread you're still having a few poop accidents, too. It can be very frustrating. Here's one article with some suggestions, in case you haven't already seen it.

My routine with submissive pee-ers....you don't talk to them until they have relieved themselves. When I get home from work, the dogs go out, I don't really talk to them individually until they are all outside. We have a 10 month old griff pup who will tinkle with excitement, so we get her out as quick as possible. If my husband comes home later than me, he's not allowed to talk to her individually until the excitement calms down in the house. If you are approached by someone, no baby voices, no sole-focus on the puppy, have them sit and wait for attention.

Thank you! The article was very informative! Jackson doesn't pee on my husband or myself just visitors so maybe it is excitement peeing. At this point we meet and greet out on the driveway and are trying to keep excitement down. Typically, he settles down and no more incidents. It's been 12 years since I've had a new pup so guess I'm on the learning curve again! Really appreciate your help!
