    Cool Back again!

Hey there, I was here before a few years back with the same username. I can't remember the last time I signed in here but I couldn't figure out why I couldn't log in anymore! I still have my wonderful yellow lab, Vala, who is now 6 years old, my boyfriend and I are finally married, I'm finally a registered nurse, and my husband and I recently moved from Illinois to Indiana, so Vala has a nice backyard to play around around in finally!

We had taken Vala to the vet a few days ago because the epulus she had removed back in November 2011 seems to be growing back. Back in October of last year she had been limping on and off and whimpered when we touched her hind legs for a few days and by the time she got to the vet the pain was resolved, so our vet recommended whenever she ends up having to be under anesthesia to do an x-ray of her hips, so we did, along with a dental x-rays, dental cleaning, and a skin tag removal on her back leg.

Luckily the epulus still appears to be benign, but the vet is going to have a radiologist look at it. We got some sad news that I always somewhat suspected, Vala has hip dysplagia. The vet said when he did the Ortolani test that her hips were very loose and he was thinking her x-rays were going to be a lot worse, but that her x-rays weren't too awful for her having hip dysplagia all this time. Unfortunately that's not all, we also found out that Vala has some pretty bad arthritis in her back. I feel so bad that we didn't know sooner about all of this. She is a very hardy girl and never really shows us when she's in pain. So now we just started glucosamine supplements yesterday and we're hoping they make her feel like a puppy again.

Hi and welcome back! Thank you for the detailed update, sounds like a lot of good things have happened, at least most of them sound positive and optimistic.
Sending good thoughts and keeping fingers crossed for Vala. Six years is still a pretty young age for these problems, we were there at 12/13 with Lynn, but I must admit that if we'd had the X rays taken sooner, there was no reason, we might have found out it'd all started a lot earlier than we thought. However, these problems are manageable and you're right, labs are pretty tough and they almost never let you know they're in pain which makes things usually a bit more complicated Good luck. M&M

Welcome back! Sorry to hear about your girl's arthritis. Hope the supplements will help. Regular mild exercise is also very important for a dog with arthritis, IMO.

    Hi, Duckie.

I remember you and Vala (I used to be "Baffle" here).....welcome back!

The supplements should help Vala to stay comfortable while remaining active....there are a lot of different supps to consider and glucosamine is a good one (at least to start with).

    Hello and Welcome Back!

Agree with giving supplements and continuing exercise as tolerated. It does help.
