    Throwing up at night

For the last 3 nights, our 10 yr. old yellow lab mix has thrown up during the middle of the night (between 1:30 - 5am). She is throwing up small amount of partially digested food. Otherwise acts and eats fine. We had pulled her off her dog food a couple weeks ago as she was having diarrhea which we thought might be the result of being on an antibiotic after surgery and the flora in her tummy was "off" (does that happen in dogs????) We gave her just rice, last week, and then began reintroducing her food, in small amounts, with the rice. We also added some pumpkin on Monday at the suggestion of a friend who said it's good for diarrhea. The pumpkin definitely solved that problem, but that afternoon she threw up after she at her dinner (4pm). We thought it might have been the pumpkin or that we gave her a more dry food than we should have as we're easing it back in. We stopped the pumpkin and continued slowly upping the ratio of rice to food.
I've been reading looking at other sites and responses people are getting who have dogs that vomit. Many of their dogs are vomiting bile. Our dog isn't. There was a suggested that she may need a small snack of food before going to bed. The vomiting may be due to being hungry?? Anyone heard of this? They eat at 6:30am and 3:30-4pm. Both dogs just had physicals, blood screens and fecal tests in February. All came out good.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

It could be empty tummy syndrome but as you say, the vomit is usually bile. You can try a treat or two before bedtime. I do that because ours eat at about 3-4 in the afternoon.

Yes, antibiotics can mess up the normal flora in the gut. You can try a probiotic like Culturelle or active plain greek yogurt. There are others that have been listed on this site; a search on this site will bring up more. Use the word probiotic.

When we do a bland diet, I use over boiled rice and boiled chicken or boiled hamburger. Depending on the problem, I feed that from a few days to a week and then slowly start adding kibble back into the mix. Go slowly.
