Welcome!Have you crate trained her?
Hi all! My name is Matt and I'm a brand new owner here of a precious female black lab. I named her Harley and she's the sweetest thing ever. I'm a new dog owner so I'm here to learn. First and foremost though I'm looking for good resources on the basics of training. She's taken to me very quickly and clearly sees me as the "pack leader" so I think it'll be easy roads ahead, I just want to do it right. She seems like a quick learner.
I'm probably on the minority side of things here but I work from home and she's by my side basically 24/7, which is something I contribute to being a young puppy in a new place, but it is a behavior I'm worried about. She is much more docile than I expected. She seems happy but I don't even need to leash her outside. As I type this she laying under me chewing a ball, listening to birds. She won't stray more than 20 feet from me. I installed a runner 2 days ago and I'm gently easing her into being alone but for the small intervals I've left her outside, 90% is just whining, waiting for me. There's 2 other adults that live here and when we're inside she'll spend time with them, but once I leave the room she's up and back on my hip.
Welcome!Have you crate trained her?

Well, she has a crate that she goes in and out of freely, she definitely knows it's for her. She sleeps in it, But I've never left her in, locked it and walked away.
Welcome! She is beautiful! The training section has lots of tips on training, and if you have specific questions feel free to make a thread! Also, if you would like more personal help, feel free to PM me and I can help as best as I can!

Sme dogs just love their humans. She'll probably learn to accept alone time after she settles in more. In the house my dog has to accompany me everywhere I go. He's never more than 5 feet from me. The fact that your girl can lay down and chew quietly is a big plus! So is the fact that she stays close to you outside. Many people train for months or years to get their dogs to behave that way. She sounds perfectly well behaved
Hi and welcome! A new puppy likes to stick close to their human, at least in the beginning, it is a big scary world and everything is new. That is not to say they can't be braver when walking with you! That is one of the best times to put everything in their mouth, unfortunately. Labs tend to be very people oriented dogs and it is not unusual to have them on your heels most of the time. I honestly can not remember the last time I showered alone, I always have an audience! My 2 can be sound asleep but if I leave the room they are right behind me. I have never left my dogs outside unattended. Too many things can happen, much too quickly. Neither of mine would do anything but whine if I tried anyway. They definitely wouldn't use the time to amuse themselves or do anything productive.
If you haven't already get signed up for a puppy k/socialization class ASAP. It is a wonderful start for a new puppy.
Best of luck with your new baby!

Thanks for all the replies! Your dogs are all beautiful!
hello and welcome.
a big issue for people who are home most of the time and get a puppy is - they don't leave the puppy. so the puppy never learns to slowly become "ok" when alove and then develop seperation anxiety.
I would make part of the daily routine time alone in the crate. it will be hard if you've had her a few weeks and haven't started yet (the crying and whining) as this will be very strange and new to her. But stay strong. Put her in the crate with a big cookie or better yet, stuffed kong to keep her busy.
I would also add some time with you out of hte house most days (if not every day). if you can crate an errand or just go walk around the black.
When you go to let puppy out of the crate or get home, be calm and ignore her, you being in her sight shoudl be no big deal, it shoudl nto be "WOOHOO LOOK WHO'S HOME). wait until puppy is settled and quiet to open the door. This will take time at first, eventually with time it will be routine.
Lastly - she is still a baby so normal she may not run off. But please do not rely on this to keep her safe. She will one day find her curiosity/independance and go explore.

Hi and welcome from another black girl whose dad also works from home; BTW he says hi too. Harley is a real cute young lady and I'm sure that if you lived closer we could be good buddies.
