    Hello from new puppy owner

Hello, I am enjoying your forum. I am doing an owner trainer service dog trainer and I got a 9 week old lab puppy last week. He screamed the himself out on the drive home and spent the next day refusing to play with toys and biting me. His bite inhibition has greatly improved in the week I have had him. I am greatly looking forward to his appointment to get his second combo vac on Monday so I can stop worrying so much about Parvo. He is signed up for a local puppy class that starts the 30th.

I am working with him to get over his fear of the car. I am feeding him in the running car and taking him for short trips with high value treats. Dog Appeasing Pheromone is helping a lot as long as it is not too hot to keep the car closed. Any other suggestions would be welcome. I need to get him up to an hour on the interstate by June 9 when service dog classes start.

Awww...and he looks so innocent in the picture. Welcome to the board! What's the little beast's name?

I'd suggest the DAP collar...sounds like you're using the spray (I've found the collar to be much more effective in the first place...and open windows won't matter.) Sounds like you're already doing a good job addressing his fear. If he doesn't like the sound of the car doors closing, I'd suggest that you work on him with that a good bit before the 4th of July if you're near fireworks. Dogs I know who hate fireworks and thunderstorms also are frightened by car doors.

    Hello and Welcome!

Congratulations on your new family member.

Do you crate the pup in the car? That may help. Open windows so that there is fresh air and you can even use a sheet to cover the crate giving him his own private den. Is he salivating or vomiting in the car? That can be a sign of motion sickness.

Both of my dogs really didn't like the car so much, but they got over it, especially once they figured out that the car led to good times. However, they were not sick in the car nor were they necessarily frantic. More like their initial reaction to the crate. I ended up ignoring the behavior and it went away.

Welcome! I also like the DAP or Adaptil collar, but I prefer the sprays for pups. I put it on the crate or crate pad about 10 or 15 minutes before the drive. Feeding in the car, as long as it is not just before a big drive, also has helped my rescues.
