    Hi, and welcome!

Is this what your puppy was eating before you got him? Sometimes if a puppy's food is changed they will get loose bowels. I am not familiar with meralac, but it is generally recommended here to keep the puppy on the food he was getting before you got him for several weeks, until he gets settled in to his new home. Did the person you got him from give you any feeding instructions including when to stop using the feeding supplement?

I googled up on Meralac and it sounds like a puppy his age should not need to be on it now. I will echo Smartrock and ask if the breeder had him on it? If so it seems peculiar he would react to it, you'd think his system would be used to it. But if you put him on it yourself that might cause a bit of upset. The link says it's for orphan and weaning puppies. At two months old he must be weaned, and if an orphan shouldn't need it any longer, though maybe an orphan needs it a bit longer. Maybe a breeder will comment on that. Puppy was born April 18? If he is two months old now?

What do you mean by loose stool? On this chart:

Foothill Pet Hospital - Santa Barbara Veterinarian

I myself would not worry until it got to number 6 or 7 and even a one off of 6 wouldn't bother me. Though I'd watch to see if it continued. Sometimes even a change of water can affect some pups.

I'm not sure about the amount you say he ate the last day. Is that his choice? Or is that what you offered him? Most of us feed pups three times a day.

    Hi snowshoe,

Thank tou for your reply. Later night at around 9:30 pm (IST) i gave him homemade yogurt (3 spoon) with little bit water and he dig it all... He didnt leave anything in the bowl. So I thought of gibing him one more spoon of yogurt with water. Later night around 10:30 pm he did potty and the stools were 6 & 7 number (according to the chart) and he was playing and we can see that he was very active since he had the yogurt.

He peed many times at night, around 15 times. In the morning i.e. 6:00 am (IST), I gave him again 2 spoons of yogurt with water and he finished it all. By that behaviour I got to know that he loves yogurt. So I've got few questions:

1- do you think he got worms in his stomach? (His belly is big compare to other parts of the body)

2- should I feed him rice & yogurt again on his next meal?

3- I tried to feed him dog food which is: Royal Canin Maxi Starter mother & Babydog, is that right for him cos he just ate once since I brought him home? [I give him with little bit of water for 15-20 mins, as the food is hard to chew].

4- should I give him meralac?

5- what other food should I try to give?

    Thank you

If you have not taken your puppy to the vet to be checked, to start getting his vaccines, and to be tested for worms, I would suggest doing that as soon as possible. Puppies require more than yogurt to eat and since many of us are not familiar with the foods available in India, your vet should be able to give you good information. You should go as soon as possible so the puppy is getting the right nourishment for healthy growth.

If you want to stick with royal canin, at this age you should be ok to switch to maxi puppy. At that age my girl was getting 3 cups per day split into 3 meals. Good luck at the vet!

you need to get to the vet. In north american it's recommended to see a vet within a week of having your new puppy to discuss vaccination schedule and ensure the pup is healthy. They can test for worms. make sure to keep the puppy in your arms or a carrier and not let them touch the groun of the vet office as that is where sick dogs go.

rice and yogurt is not proper nutrition for a growing puppy. you need to get to a vet and discuss with them or find a puppy dog food (kibble - and yes you can water it down and let it soak so it is easier to eat). Generally in north america we don't recommended adding calcium to a puppy's diet as the dog food is supposed to be balanced with all the dog needs - and adding more can cause harm. However, I know things are not quite the same in your area based on previous members to the board. So I would chat with the vet and do some research - if you pick a proper puppy food (dog food) you need to think it over and make a decision.

feeding mre smaller meals is good at that age (3x a day for example).

meralac isn't really used by the general dog owner population here in north america. I don't know what it is so cannot recommend either way.

Is the breeder you got the puppy from at all "knowledgable" in dogs? If so I would ask them what THEY feed their puppies.

    Hi tanya,
I went to the vet and he said his vaccination will take place in 7 days. And you are right about only giving yogurt. But the problem is he dosn't like to eat anything else than yogurt. I tried giving the dog biscuit aswell.

What food I can try to give him as I'm really worried about tucksy. Vet also said that he is fine as he is growing now so he will look thin.

What sould I try him to give?

    Thank you

Did the vet not give you any recommendations for food? I think I've seen other members from India say that they give their puppies milk or yogurt but that is not commonly given in the US to growing puppies because of the possibility of giving more calcium than a growing puppy needs. If he did not give you any recommendations, you could ask when you go back for the shots next week.

Since I do not know what other brands are available to you, and if Tucksy is about 8 weeks old or older, you could move up to the Royal Canin Puppy formula, not the Starter, but the next level, the Puppy food. You could get the smallest bag available to feed him until you speak to the vet again next week. Labs are not considered large breed dogs but some breeders do feed their puppies large breed formulas. It looks like Royal Canin Medium Puppy or Maxi Puppy food might be available to you. Feed the puppy according to the directions on the bag of dog food.

For example, when I look at the feeding directions for the Medium Puppy food, if you think your puppy will grow to be about 50 pounds (22-24 kg) and the puppy is 2 months old, it says you would feed about 2 1/2 cups of food per day. You should divide this into 3 equal portions of about 3/4 cup per meal. Mix a little warm water into the food and let it sit for 10 - 15 minutes to soften up some before feeding it to the puppy.

Since you are already feeding Royal Canin, I would not change brands for now. If you give too many treats between meals, Tucksy may not be hungry at meal time, so I would not give yogurt or other treats between meals, at least until Tucksy is eating his meals. Puppies and dogs generally will not starve themselves but they can convince you that the food is terrible and that sometimes makes the owner add things to the food to make it more tasty. This can make your puppy become a picky eater. I'd give Tucksy 15-20 minutes to eat his meal and then pick up the food bowl until the next meal. Throw out the food from that meal and make a fresh meal each time.

Was the person you got the puppy from feeding the Maxi Starter? Did they give you any information on what to feed your puppy? If you think that the place you got your puppy is knowledgeable and reliable, you could ask them for advice on feeding as well.
