We live in WI so a few hundred miles from PA. The most expensive breeders we ran across during our search were the byb types and the ones with "silver" or "charcoal" labs. Keep in mind that a quality breeder plans a litter of pups when they have a need, whether it is show or hunt or obedience, for a new dog. They are not out to make a profit but are trying to better the breed in some way. I have found that quality breeders often have a lower price OR the same price with all clearances, contract, shots and dewormings...etc. I know price is an issue. Not every well bred dog costs 3500. Especially with a family I would strongly urge you to keep looking
I think $1000 - $2000 is more realistic. I would be curious as to why that breeder asks $3500. If it is a quality that is important to you then I guess that's the price, but I would see what others in the area have to offer.

Hello, after doing a lot of research and comparing prices and then the love and sensitivity in breeding a top quality labbie.. I chose my breeder well. 1300 dollars and arrived to a home that was clean and smelled good... even with her several pens of lab puppies... yes.. and in her master bedroom.. she only breeds one time a year. She gets up in the middle of night to start potty training.. she gave me a huge book she put together for her customers that covered everything you want to know.. Sophie came chipped and fully vetted for her age. WE met mom and dad.. so gentle they were.. and this breeder breeds for calmness and gentleness. She is intense in her breeding.. she has horses, cows, cats, and rabbits.. the pups are raised underfoot and were loved on by her EIGHT children. She has had people travel from Canada and overseas because of her reputation. I find her to be average price because she said she just loves them so much. I found others higher at 1800 dollars and bred also silver labs which were a turn off for me. I love the breeder I chose and will buy from her again.
Thanks,
Sophie's mom
Since I do not know the breeder I cannot comment on the dogs. However, if you want a nice family pet, I'm sure you can find a very reputable breeder for much less. I know some breeders (not in that area) that are very reputable and don't charge near that amount.

For $3500 that puppy better poop gold in my opinion. Thats outrageous. What exactly is $3500 buying you??
$800 to $1500 is reasonable for a well bred puppy. I wouldnt spend more than that
I think I know who the breeder is you are referring to. Please get your post count up so good, reputable breeders can be recommended to you. 3 times the average price does not mean quality. There are so many other things that are important before you start to concern yourself with price. The average price in the area you are looking is $1200 - $1800 for a quality puppy. Don't be fooled by fancy websites, please do your homework first. You may need to wait a while but it will be well worth it!

I live in southern CA, and my pup cost $1500. The 'iffy' pups were 1200 from an iffy breeder, 800 -1200 for the puppy mill labs and 600 or less for the BYB puppies. Check pedigrees, health clearances and parent temperament.
3500 is way too high, and more money does not always mean better.
You can search the dogs listed in pedigrees and check out their kennels website. Like many others have mentioned, get your post count up so you can send messages. There are many helpful members that can steer you in the right direction. I found the help invaluable once I was ready to get on a waiting list.
If more than one person advises against a breeder, take it to heart...

I still shake my head over the prices people pay for the silver "labs". Supposed "rare" colors, huge commercial kennel operations, both parents on the premises, breeders that require you return a puppy with health issues or worse a death certificate, multiple/constant litters are often warning signs to look for. Any of these things would cause me to research and probably run in the opposite direction.
