    Newbie from California!

Three months ago, Lucy, my dog of eleven years, was PTS because of megasophagus and chronic pneumonia. It was the hardest decision I've ever had to make, and I was and still am absolutely heartbroken about it. She is the dog in my avatar, and obviously wasn't a lab. She was a rescue, adopted with severe dog aggression and anxiety. While she was a very important member of my family, it was always a bit disappointing when I couldn't bring her to the beach, on hikes, to the dog park, or on vacation with the humans. Ever since I was young, I've always been head-over-heels for labs with their love of water and friendly, outgoing temperament. I have also always wanted to have a dog that I can compete in fun dog sports like dock diving and agility. In short, I'd like a companion that I can really live my life with rather than leaving at home.

Anyway, I'm not planning on adding a new member to my family anytime soon. I really want to get off on the right foot and learn everything I need to know before taking the plunge, hence my appearance here.

Hi and welcome! Labs are awesome dogs but you are doing the right thing by learning first. Some people are surprised at the amount of time and training that goes in to getting the great dog you can take anywhere. Research is your best friend and there is lots of info here and many members that will help you on your journey.

I am very sorry for your loss, Godspeed Lucy.

So sorry about Lucy. My first lab is turning 14 in September - and has quite a few health issues so even though he still goes to the dog park, etc. with the puppy - he is slowing down - and is on medication - very hard to see. Labs are wonderful - and you can - with patience and training - take them everyone. My 15 month old puppy LOVES everyone - dogs and humans alike. Sometimes it just takes us forever to take a walk - because everyone wants to stop and pet him and talk about their lab at home, or their brother's lab, etc. Soon - you may be finding a new family member in fur form - and the folks on this forum have been invaluable to me! Good luck.

Sorry about Lucy. I hope you are comforted by the fact that you gave her a good life.

Labs are great dogs, and can be fantastic companions with training and patience (just like practically any dog). Not sure if you are looking for an adult dog or a puppy; if you want to rescue again or go to a breeder. Due to their popularity, there are oodles of Labrador breeders, which makes weeding through them overwhelming for a lot of folks, I think. Luckily there are many good breeders in California who breed Labs that have health clearances, who compete with their dogs in a variety of activities to prove they are good examples of the breed and have all the classic traits of a Labrador (which is what you want since you're interested in a dog with a "love of water and friendly, outgoing temperament"), and are supportive of their dogs and puppy buyers for a lifetime. We cannot name breeders in posts, but feel free to PM once you have 10 or more posts if that's the route you are planning to take to obtain your Lab.
