Silvers originate from a kennel that had both labs and weimaraners. The two breeds bred and the dishonest breeder registered the puppies as chocolate labs. The dilute silver gene has since become integrated but it is not native to Labradors. Silver labs are technically a lab mix.

The Labrador parent club does not recognize the silver lab and opposes the practice of registering silvers as chocolate. The AKC, however, is just a registry. They do not verify that the dog registered as a chocolate lab is actually what it purports to be. They just take the money and hand over the paperwork. This is why "AKC registered" is no indication of quality.

The mention of "silvers" and the other specialty "colors " usually get out hackles up. It usually happens with dishonest breeders. Unknowing buyers are duped. However mom sounds like a sweetheart and hopefully your pup takes after her!

What area of WI are you in? I'm in South Central-about 15 minutes from IL. I can recommend a few places for puppy classes if you're close by. The city we live in doesn't have much for training facilities so we drive a ways. Finding a good facility where you like and respect the trainers and your pup enjoys the classes will be very important for you!

Dont let us scare you away from the board. Many of us started our love of dogs or labs with many questionable decisions, not even including where we got the dogs. Enjoy every second of puppyhood because it goes too fast!

Welcome...we all start somewhere. The puppies are adorable. I saw someone recommend "Good Owners, Great Dogs "by Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson. Phenomenal book. During my brief foray into breeding Golden Retrievers, when I selected parents for my pups I gave them a copy. I am new to Labs too. I was given a 6 month old Chocolate a month ago after I had put my last Golden down. Max is my boy. Love him to pieces, despite the challenges of undoing what a few weeks at a family that never had an indoor dog did to him. Ask plenty of questions, the folks here are great.

I was going to suggest that hopefully your breeder will send you home w/ all kinds of good reading reference materials in the puppy packet and offer lifetime support but given the sort of breeding that was done (likely zero health clearances etc), that probably won't happen. I wish you all the luck for health and good temperament, and second the suggested reading materials and classes. Anne

Why would ANY person not interested in breeding go to the expense of all the clearances for their dog?!

It is great that you trust the owner, I trust a few people but I sure would not trust them enough to buy a puppy from them because some random dude wanted to breed their dog and picked my bitch for the date winner! There is so MUCH more that goes in to a thoughtfully planned litter. And AKC papers are about as worthless as the paper they are printed on. Do you have all the OFA numbers for the testing of both of the dogs, if not I suggest you run. Now and quickly!

I apogize if I have offended you but "silver" and Lab (in the same sentence as breeding or puppy buying), set my teeth on edge and a random breeding pushes me over the edge. My only advice to you if you take this puppy, (I sincerely pray you do not!) is to get pet insurance, the best available, immediately.
