We went back up to Janice Gunn's place new Vancouver BC for her annual obedience camp. This year, I took Presto. I was going to take both performance dogs, but with my messed up knee I decided taking one was probably best. We had a working spot again this year.
There were more young dogs this year than last year, which was nice. I thought I'd have the only youngster, but he was right in the middle as there were puppies as young as four months and young dogs up to two ("Novice Dogs"). So, lots of foundation work. We worked on heeling quite a bit and in our one on one problem solving session we worked on progression of the hold and dumb bell retrieve. Presto tends to be "handsy" with the dumb bell (which I've only thrown for him a few times, but I notice it with other retrieve items) so wanted to work on that.
It ended up being an entire hold and retrieve session, which was so great! My favorite moment was when Janice took Presto and was showing me something. She had him come up into a sit and present the dumb bell, she grabbed it by the bells and said "out" and he held on tight. I said, "the cue is give". She said "give" and he released it. His first proofing with the dumb bell - wrong word and a stranger - and he aced it! I just love this dog.
He was a good boy for the whole seminar. The first day he slept in his crate in the building, but after that I had to crate him in the car because he would not relax inside. He was fine if I let him lay outside of his crate though, so it was not the environment. He slept in the same crate in the AirBNB just fine, so it wasn't the crate. I think he just could not shut off in that situation. Who knows. We took lots of breaks as they have about 20 acres with several ponds for field work that we were allowed to let them swim in -- and it was hot out!
Sounds like a great workshop! Although reading the title, I thought perhaps Presto was teaching. He's such a smarty pants!
