We had to say goodbye to our beloved Lab, Lola, six weeks ago at age 13. Her full name was "Lola Sun and the Moon," two constants in all of our lives.
Lola turned 13 years old in August and had started slowing down over the past two years. On a Saturday morning, she couldn’t stand up, so we took her to the emergency vet, where they diagnosed her with pneumonia. She didn’t respond to the medications and developed a high fever overnight. We made the difficult decision to let her go the next morning. We stayed by her side until the end, just as she had been by ours every day of our lives.
What an amazing dog she was! Lola was a beach warrior until she blew out her knee and had to undergo full TPLO surgery. Then she tore her meniscus on the same leg as the TPLO, requiring another surgery. After that, her beach days were over. Away from the beach, Lola worked part-time as a comfort dog, visiting local care homes with my wife and me, or attending UCSC events to help students relieve stress during finals.
A couple of years ago, Lola let us know she was done with her Comfort Dog work, and we understood. But that didn’t stop her from going on weekly hikes with her local dog pack. Her last pack outing was in April of this year, so she was still spry enough to jump in the dog walker's SUV and claim her favorite middle seat. The dog walking company nicknamed her "Miss Bossy Pants", which fit Lola to a T! 🤣
Lola was a true adventure dog who taught us how to live one day at a time.
This forum was a godsend for us since we hadn’t raised a puppy before…many thanks to all for your advice in her early years.

13 years went by in the blink of an eye.
Thanks so much. Lola was barking and knocking around a Kong Wobbler and also had a mini zoomy session the Thursday before we let her go. At least she didn’t have any prolonged suffering.
I'm so sorry to read this, thank you for letting us know. Lola was such a lovely girl and her knee issues made me sad to know her beach babe days were over. Hugs to you.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Thanks so much for your post, Sue! We miss her and the house is too quiet right now. We know another Lab is in our future.
