    Tail injury

I came home from work and was greeted enthusiastically by both my boys. It was shortly thereafter that I noticed that Cooper had blood on his face, I then noticed blood on the floor, the walls, my cupboards and pretty much every surface in the kitchen and front entrance. Neither dog looked injured and were both just happy to see me home from work. I did a quick run of my hands all over Coopers body, seeing as he was bloody, checked his ears and mouth…. Nothing. I did the same to Dozer, started at his head and worked my way down his body and then his tail….. bingo, the very end of his tail was bleeding. Dozer has the most intense tail wag I have ever witnessed…. I managed to get pressure on his tail, cleaned it and got him settled down….. and then he wagged his tail and hit it and the blood started again. Any tips, experience, ideas? I just don’t know how I will be able to get this to heal…

Poor baby. A lab's tail is so busy it's hard to get an injury to heal. It might take a vet looking at it, maybe a stitch or two and protection. Anything you can do to protect the area would help. How about cleaning, vet wrap, and cover with a paper towel tube or TP tube vet wrapped on? Good luck.

Sounds like what's referred to as "happy tail". Not a happy situation for you, though. I haven't had that in any of our dogs, surprisingly, but a neighbor's dog spent months with his tail covered with foam pipe insulation and/or vet wrap last year, trying to heal up a bleeding spot halfway down the length of his tail. I think he had 2 separate episodes requiring treatment. Fortunately his tail seems to be in good working order now, still wagging vigorously. You could look up "happy tail" but here's a start:

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Yes, that definitely sounds like what is going on. We managed to keep him quiet last evening and the bleeding has stopped, although I am worried he will hit his tail and it will start bleeding again. I wasn’t able to find the cut on his tail, but cleaned the whole end of the tail, we applied an ice pack for a bit last evening as well.

One hit on the wall and it’s bleeding again…. We are going to have to wrap it to protect it. It’s the very end of his tail that he has injured, thinking of using an old padded finger splint, gauze for extra padding and Vet wrap. We will Google and find the best way to do this, we know we don’t want it too tight….

This is a tough one. It's so hard to get anything to adhere with all that fur. Best wishes for a quick recovery and hope you figure something out quick!

Wrap is on, after several attempts. I had to message an online friend that is a Vet Tech, with her online assistance it’s wrapped.
