I've been giving Cookie 1/2 Previcox daily for a year and a half now with no issues. If I were you I'd do a full blood panel to check the liver values and go from there.

Hi everyone, it has been years since my last post. I’m here to find a solution to my problem. I searched internet, asked vets etc but I need you help.
I’m giving Tilya Previcox for about 8 months. This decision was not taken because of not knowing the side effects, but I preferred to take the risk. Because she is having serious pain from arthritis and this drug gives her a much better life. She can even go to walks with me and enjoy being together outside. I tried other things, like curcumin, glucosamin, collagen etc etc, I do not see any benefit of them.
Lately, she is having stomach issuesShe started to vomit in the last days and I feel like she has a digestion issue. I want to treat this problem, rather than stopping Previcox. Do you have any opinions? My vet suggested me to use Sucralfate in the morning and in the evening. I already started this.
Do you have a better solution or what do you think about this treatment option. Please do not tell me to stop PrevicoxIf you know a better medicine for pain, of course I would be glad to hear.
Thanks a lot <3

Oh my goodness, we haven't heard from you in so long! I'm sorry to hear Tilya is having issues. I certainly understand not wanting to stop using something that has been giving her pain relief. It is a hard issue, finding a medication that keeps her comfortable and active with fewer side effects. Sucralfate is also used in humans. I have not used it for my dogs, but it is supposed to coat the stomach and provide some relief. You can't give it at the same time as other meds, such as Previcox, since it can interfere with the absorption of the other meds.
My dog Lark had issues with tendonitis in her shoulders. The orthopedic veterinarian who treated her prescribed Galliprant. It is still a NSAID, as is Previcox, but has a slightly different mechanism of action. Unfortunately it has similar side effects. Lark only needed it short term while undergoing physical therapy and having some cold laser therapy done so I don't have experience with long term use. It did work very well for her. https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinar...osteoarthritis
I hope you find some relief for Tilya. I hope you're doing well.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Previcox, like most NSAIDS, have long-term side effects, particularly related to the GI system, causing gastric erosions. It can also cause kidney disease as well. You have a lot of other natural options that will give her relief from pain without the side effects. Acupuncture does a wonderful job controlling pain. If it is joint pain, a homeopathic remedy called T-relief for arthritis works great. It was researched in Europe doing double blind studies comparing it to Carporfen, another popular NSAID used in dogs and performed as well or better than the NSAID. It has become so popular for use in dogs that the company is now making one for pets. You can get it on Amazon under T-relief for arthritis for pets. For the GI problems your dog is having, give slippery elm or marshmallow extract once a day and it will resolve the problem. You cannot give either of these with any meds or supplements as they will block the absorption. Good luck.
have you tried acupuncture?

Hi Elena,
Do you give any other meds to Cookie before giving Previcox? Like sucralfate?
After my last post I started to give Tilya sucralfate and the vomitting stopped. It has been 9 months. Now she started to vomit again. I'll took her to the vet of course but looking for alternatives as well to ask vet.
They are all different and pain meds wear off, or have to be increased in dosage. An alternative to investigate is Cartrophen Vet. Note spelling, this is NOT Carprofen which can be hard on the liver. After the initial loading your Vet may be able to show you how to inject it yourself. I used it for Oban, Jet and a cat. It lost it's effectiveness on the two dogs after a while. Oban was on sucralfate for a very short time, it didn't seem to help much. We also tried CBD oil for pain and I saw no improvement with it either. Oban did switch to a Holistic/Integrative Vet when none of the western meds helped his diarrhoea. We had instant success with stopping the meds (weaned off prednisone) and starting a home cooked diet of a novel protein and novel carb. Along with TCM and acupuncture. At that time, age 6 , pain was not an issue but later on, as he aged, it was and cold laser helped more than acupuncture.

I don't know what sucralfate is. Cookie is on a lot of medication beside Previcox, since he also has heart and kidney issues along with dementia. I give Previcox with food. No vomiting whatsoever which is amazing since vomiting and kidney disease go hand in hand. Are you certain the vomiting is from the Previcox?
