    Acid reflux

Our almost 4 year old lab, Amber, has had a problem with acid reflux lately. Not every night but maybe once a week she will wake us up around 6:30am and vomit yellow bile. We took her to the vet and did blood work and all came back fine. We have had her on Nutrisource chicken and rice and he suggested we switch her to the lamb formula and give her one Famotidine at bedtime and slowly start weaning her off the Famotidine. We are transitioning her into the lamb starting today. We have also been giving her a little kibble at night before she goes to bed around 10. Does anyone have any other suggestions that have helped their pup. This morning I gave her a big spoonful of canned dog food before I took her outside to keep her from eating grass and she barely nibbled any grass this time. When she comes back in she eats her food well and doesn't have any more issues all day long. We feed her about 2 cups of kibble a day, once in the morning, in the evening around 6PM and the small amount before bed.

If you look up empty stomach syndrome in dogs, you may see what you're talking about. One of mine had that problem for a while. Since I don't work outside the home usually, I can feed him 3 meals a day, the last meal not until around 8 pm. Then I give him 2 medium sized Milk Bones as he's going to bed. I'm not familiar with that food but I chose a food with fewer calories per cup for his evening meal so that I was giving more food but still feeding the same number of calories as the other food he eats. On rare occasion now he might get a little "yorky" in the early morning, but I try to feed him as soon as he gets up. The Purina Pro Plan I feed has small kibbles, the Royal Canin I feed has larger kibbles. Yes, I feed either food at any meal but usually the RC at bedtime. I like to have 2 foods my dogs can eat and switch to cold turkey in case of recalls or supply issues.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Our first lab puppy had empty tummy syndrome, so she always got a handful of kibble and a milkbone at bedtime. Worked like a charm. When we got Stormy as a puppy, we automatically kept up the tradition and she has no complaints, lol.

I've had the same problem with my current Labs, Rose and Brooks off and on. I feed Brooks 2x per day, along with various treats and he does well with that. Will get a bile vomit every now and then in the late afternoon. Rose just turned a year old, and I had to start feed 3/4 of her daily allotment of food in the evening, and 1/4 in the morning. She was never really enthusiastic about eating in the A.M. but would wolf down he evening meal. I get an A.M. bile vomit maybe once per week now, versus 2-3 times per week before.

Same with my previous lab, Sprocket! She had to have several small “bedtime biscuits” and then she was fine. Like you, I kept up the tradition with Diggity and he has no complaints either!
