Yesterday Loua had a minor procedure done because she badly tore her left paw dewclaw nail to the nailbed. It was torn in 1/2 horizontally and another tear vertically. We were playing ball and Loua did a little slide to fetch it and she came to me limping. I immediately saw her nail sticking out sideways, put the broken nail back in place and wrapped her paw and then phoned the vet. Got her into the vet, they sedated her and cut off the severed pieces, cauterized what's left of her nail and then wrapped up her paw. We picked her up 3 hours later.
Loua is a good patient [for paw care], but can be a drama queen when she has an owie. We've taught Loua (and all our other dogs) to "lay down, head down" so we can see what's going on and then help them.
Loua has to be careful with her paw for 14 days and then we can play ball again!
Get better fast, Loua!

Yes, Loua was in pain - she cried, but we both stayed calm through it. Loua is a touchy-feelly kinda of girl, so maybe to her it's comforting that I was gently petting her and taking care of her sore nail. Loua really is a good patient, the vet also said this when she met Loua -"she's very calm, considering". Loua is on Medicam for 3 days, then we go the Arnica Montana for the pain. We had to change the dressing last night and there was no bleeding, which is good. There's a little stubby of nail left and it will take time for it to grow.

I had the same thing happen with my first Lab, Ella. Luckily it healed up just fine, and I hope Loua heals quickly too!

Loua is back to normal again! No more dressing and sockie, no more bootie, just bare pawed and running around and going for walks. It's hard to keep a happy girl quiet and calm.
