We knew that Loua had 2 bad molars in the back of her mouth, but she actually had 8 molars extracted by a dental specialist today! X-rays revealed that Loua has a bad bite (not over or under, but side-ways) and this caused her to grind her back molars down to her gums, she also had several abscesses. All left and right, top and bottom molars were removed so that Loua would bite more comfortably. Loua showed us no signs of mouth problems until she yawned in my face a few months ago and I saw brown molars in the back of her mouth, but because of her having been spayed in Jan/25, we had to wait for the dental specialist appointment and then surgery today.
For the next 2 weeks, it's soft food and treats for Loua. The vet said Loua has a lot of sutures in her mouth and they will dissolve in about 3-4 weeks.
Hopefully Loua will feel much better and chew everything more comfortably.
P.S. Ursa is doing quite well!

Our Chase had one of his upper carnassial teeth removed, it was cracked and abscessed, which we didn't know by how he acted, just by his terrible breath. His recovery went smoothly and he ate like there was never a tooth there. I hope Loua's recovery goes equally smoothly!

Thanks for all the well wishes for Loua!!
Yes Sue, the terrible breath was the clue that something was wrong in Loua's mouth.
I took Loua back to the vet this afternoon because of her very stinky mouth and me smelling pus. Yup, an infection, for which she's on antibiotics for 7 days and another follow-up app't next week.
P.S. For those who have thought it and now I'm typing it out loud, it's a good thing that Loua wasn't bred back in Nov/24. So much would have gone wrong, including Loua infecting herself even more and then her puppies! The thought of it makes me shiver! My ESP kept me alert and eventually it all went in Loua's best interest.

Oh my goodness, poor girl! Hope the infection resolves soon.
I don't know if Loua's incorrect bite that led to this issue could have only been seen on an x-ray (?) but this is one of the things why breeders should aim for a correct scissor bite. Yes, it's definitely a good thing Loua wasn't bred, for her and for the puppies.

Yes, the xrays told us what was really going on in Loua's mouth.I don't know if Loua's incorrect bite that led to this issue could have only been seen on an x-ray (?) but this is one of the things why breeders should aim for a correct scissor bite. Yes, it's definitely a good thing Loua wasn't bred, for her and for the puppies.
We first noticed Loua's dental problem last year Sept with her annual vet visit when I mentioned her bad breath to her vet. We had 2 sedation-free hygiene dental appointments scheduled at different times, assuming that's all that Loua needed, but we were told by her breeder that she didn't like this service and to wait until after she went into her heat cycle, so we cancelled the 2 appointments. Not once did her breeder look in her mouth to see Loua's teeth for herself and she's a RVT! Then Loua went into heat on October 21/24 and we're told to wait until after her AI and pregnancy for any dental work to be done, which put us into late March/25. It was with her spaying in Jan/25 that on our request, the vet did an oral exam and noticed her teeth were in bad shape, but we had to wait about 2 months before Loua could go under anesthetic again for her dental work and then, one of the dental specialist went on maternity leave, causing a longer wait time.
It sickens us that poor Loua was in pain and had to wait so long to see a dental vet! It also sickens us that her breeder didn't care about Loua's well being and didn't listen to our concerns on this and several issues, but focused only on the bloody money she'd make on puppy sales,... which she didn't make after all. We've had the pleasure of dealing with many breeders over the years of owning CKC registered Labs and have maintained great relationships with these breeders to this day, sadly however, this is not the case with Loua's breeder because she's too controlling and doesn't listen to her puppy buying people. So here's the story and my beef!
Today, Loua is licking less and her breath is already less stinky, thanks to her being on antibiotics.
