No advice, but I hope you get some answers and that she starts feeling better!
Hello,
I have a 7 year old chocolate lab that is experiencing seizure like symptoms and I'm very concerned for her.
She currently has a sprained shoulder and has been sleeping a lot because she can only limp around. However, just today she has had a few episodes where she went crazy...literally! She started by barking and howling (like they do when they hear sirens), then she started running in circles banging into things, and finally urinating all over the floor. We were freaking out not knowing what to do and trying to calm her down so she wouldn't ruin her sprained muscle. It was as if she didn't even know we were there and just went crazy. This lasted for a few minutes and has reoccurred twice in the same day.
The vet did a blood test and said that the results came back negative for cancer, liver disease, and lime disease.
Another thing is that she was taking tramadol for her sprained muscle. I have read that some side effects for animals can be seizures even at normal doses. Her symptoms don't quite align with seizures in that she didn't roll on her back and start kicking (or something similar). Instead, she just went crazy doing what seemed like everything else.
Right now, we are getting her off tramadol but other that that, we are confused and concerned that this could be something we don't want to hear. Can sprained muscles lead to some neurological disorder? It's just so odd that she was feeling great not that long ago and then this comes. I don't recall any signs that would have lead to something like this.
So, have any of you experienced (or heard of) anything similar to this? I really appreciate any thing you would have to say. Thanks in advance!

Sorry you're going through this. Our dog was on tramadol long time with no ill effects.
Was the shoulder the result of a physical activity? If it happens again I guess I'd ask my vet for more thorough testing or an X-ray.
Good luck and hope things improve.
We gave our senior tramadol for years with no side effects. My guess it's something aside from the medication.

The shoulder injury was the result of physical injury. Whether or not this had something to do with her recent behavior is beyond me. Thanks for your response.
I would check out a good holistic vet...by good, I mean get a referral from your vet. The AHVMA website tells you of the vet's existence...but not all holistic vets are great.
My late pom had idiopathic epilepsy and could not take tramadol because it can increase the chances of a seizure. Its also known to cause seizures in humans so its not out of the question that tramdol caused the seizure.
I would get her off the tramadol asap and go from there. And seizures in dogs dont exactly follow the same patterns like a traditional human seizure. What you saw may have been a seizure
We have her off the tramadol and it's been around 24 hours now. Within those 24 hours, she has had at least 5 episodes. I have no idea how long tramadol can last in one's system (I know it depends on the dose) but I hope we start seeing some improvements. It's hard to watch a dog go through this. I will definitely look into holistic vets.

Sounds like a reaction to something. We were blessed that Aowyn only had one Grand Maul seizure and we were able to attribute it to a food allergy.
I don't have advice but i pray for you and your dog.
