Impossible Recall !

The title is pretty clear. It's impossible to make Latte come to me. Especially when there are other dogs around. And there are dogs around all the time. A couple of weeks ago, when she was not allowed to go out, I practiced recall by the Fear of Being Too Far From You Method where there's no distractions. Just me and Latte. She was doing well. However when the outside life started, she totally began to ignore me. Fear of being too far from me? NOPE! She's OK with that. Bu I need to make her solid on recalls (well anyone do) because we don't have many secured areas and Latte is a harsh player. Any suggestions? There are lots of method on the internet but I want to hear from you guys. What will you suggest me?

Practice x a million and slowly increase the distractions. Have high-value reward ready every time. Practice some more (reinforce).

Inside our house, if Sophie has something in her mouth (bone, toy, etc.) she becomes deaf to our voices. She won't even sit. I know we've been slacking with her training so we need to get back to it, but it takes time to get a solid "anything".

This can be a hard one. Practice, practice and practice. If you feel yourself becoming frustrated, stop the session. You're pup will pick up on the frustration. Work with a long lead so you can gently enforce the command. Always end a session on a positive note. Get out the high value treats and praise like it's the biggest party ever.

That method does work best if started early, like 8 weeks old, and practised several times a day. And like any method it is not infallible for every dog. You are going to have to use other methods now, like a long line. Be careful to NOT use your recall word if you aren't 100% sure Latte will comply. You might have to change your recall word. Consider changing your word to a whistle, three tweets is commonly used for recall.

Latte is still a baby though, albeit a self confident one, but so was Oban. He was very sure of himself from an early age. Here are some things to try to entice her to come to you:

Run away.
Walk away.
Turn your back.
Examine something on the ground, like a blade of grass. Many will come to see what you are looking at.
Dig a hole in the dirt, be occupied with something that might be of interest to her.
Play with a ball, play catch with yourself, standing still and running.
Act like a fool, jump up and down, wave your arms, be totally engrossed in having a demonstrably good time all alone.

When she comes to you play with her, have a good time, let her in on the fun. Let her go. Don't grab her right away, you want her coming to you to be fun 90% of the time. Only end the play as infrequently as possible.

Practise grabbing. You do have to grab them sometimes, hopefully very rarely. Start with nothing more than touching her neck, have a play, a treat, some kind of reward, let her go. Work up to actually putting your hands on the collar, bring her to you, treat/reward and let her go. It takes a while. Good luck.

It's really true, puppies are so curious about the fun going on without them if you make a big show of it. That was the best way to get Ellie's attention when she was little. By 5 months, she was over that stage and we had to come up with new sounds to get her attention. Then she would stop responding after a day (bicycle horn, bicycle bell, dog whistle, random noises from my iPhone). We moved from that game to the 20ft cotton webbing training lead. She could go to the end of the lead, then I would plant my feet and she would have to come back to me. She resisted, but when she finally relented, she got the crazy high value treats (roasted turkey breast). Then, wow, she was on it!

Of course, that all goes out the window at seven months! Hahahaha!

We never used a long line but had Maverick drag a leash. We ran away and acted excited about other things. He comes without fail because he wants to be with us. If you find what Latte absolutely cannot be without (perhaps you????) and run off with this item, she probably will follow you.
