    2 Females

We recently lost our lab Jake in September. We would love to get another lab. We have a 7 year old female red golden retriever. Would there be a problem in adopting another female. I’ve seen so many articles warning against having 2 females. Any advice on this??? Thank you!

I'm so sorry, run free Jake. The sneezing with blood that you posted about earlier turned out to be very serious? I'm sorry.

As for two girls, I don't know, I've only ever had one dog at a time.

I am sorry for your loss of Jake.

We have had two males together at one time and two females also we never had a problem with our girls. We brought Ginger home without being able to introduce her to our other 4 at the time. We just put her in the cats room by herself so she could decompress from the stress of new people new home. Then we took Ginger outside to the yard was allowed to roam around smelling and investigating. Then we introduced Ginger to the rest of our little family one at a time to make sure she wasn't overwhelmed. Just take your time with both of them. Sometimes they walk into the house like they have always lived there and were siblings from the start, other times it might take a couple days to a couple weeks. Let them figure out the pecking order too.

Right now I have 3 intact females and an neutered male. Two are mine and the third is my sister's, who passed away in May I have had no problems with any of them but do know that females can be a handful if they take a dislike to one another. I would say that it greatly depends on the temperament of your gal and how well socialized she is.
Biggest thing with all these females is they all come into season at the same time.

I'm sorry to learn about Jake. That is such a loss. We've had 2 females before but they were litter mates. I know that there are a number of people with 2 females where they seem able to make it work but I've heard that caution about 2 females as well. Breeders such as Shelley and JenC have multiple females at a time who are all out running around together, not penned up. One of our members, ?BlackLabbies, has females, one of them being a fairly recent addition. I recall a number of past members with 2 females at a time. JollyMolly has Molly and Cassie, there was a couple who had Mocha and Java, Annette has Chloe and 2 of her girls. Hopefully someone with more experience than I can comment on whether they've found it to be problematic.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

The nosebleeds were not from allergies as we and the vet thought. I found a lesion just inside his right nostril. The vet did a biopsy and it came back as squamous cell carcinoma. We were shocked. Never saw that coming. Jake would have been 12 on 11/13. Hank you for your words.

Yes, we do have 2 females. Ursa and Loua have become best friends, more like sisters 9 years apart in age. Before Loua, it was Opal and Ursa, Opal was more a mommy figure in Ursa's life and when Opal died, Ursa became depressed, so hence we have Loua. We've only once had a male and female together and then all females, even 3 girls at a time. I prefer the females together over males, as males can become territorial and fight.

Sorry for the loss of your beloved Jake. May the wonderful memories you have of him stay with you forever. RIP sweet Jake.

Oh Anna, I can't imagine 3 girls in season at once... UGH! Loua is in her first heat and flowing like a river... we're 1 week in... and counting the days, lol. Ursa is very sweet and helping Loua through this... with kisses and licks.

So sorry about your loss. I have not been here in a long time but I'll share my story.
I was able to adopt two female black labs about 6 months old about 14 years ago now through this forum. Molly and Sadie got along very well and maybe had one fight that I was able to stop immediately. I rescued them as a pair so this isn't quite the same as your situation, just saying that they got along all their lives. Sadie went over the rainbow bridge last March 19th and Molly just left me this past Monday. I am forever grateful to the people on this board that helped get them up from SC to me.
    Thanks,
    Dave
