It's CCD (Canine Cognitive Dysfunction) for Cookie

Well, I was finally able to book and appointment with the neurologist who was recommended to us. He did some tests with Cookie and concluded it was CCD with cortical atrophy.

We are trying some new medication now (the sedatives are not doing the trick) in hopes it will slow down the process of further degeneration and that, although the episodes may never go away, they'll at least happen further apart.

Funny fact it all started more than 2 years ago. Now we know what this was: https://www.lab-retriever.net/board/...-behavior.html

Cookie is otherwise doing fine, the weather hasn't been too nice this spring so we didn't spend much time in the fountain yet. I've finally ordered a Help Em Up harness which should arrive next week, so it will make my life easier when navigating stairs and steeper inclines. Other than that, I hope we'll be celebrating Cookie's 15th birthday with a nice cake in two month's time.

Good boy Cookie, you keep on truckin'. I suppose it's the same as with people, there are many different kinds of dementia, as well as different manifestations. Even though my sister is a nurse we had never heard of some till my Mum got very old. Dogs must be the same, I guess. Cookie still smiles in his photos, that's good to see.

I hope the new medication makes a difference for your sweet boy. I like the idea that he'll have more adventures, even if a bit slower, and another wonderful birthday (or more). One thing is for sure...he enjoys his life and knows that you make it the best life possible for him. He knows!

Keep going Cookie. A testament to what controlled exercise and supplementation can do for a dog that has had their share of issues.

Cookie has come through a lot over the past few years. I think he's a survivor and fingers crossed he does well with the new meds!

Sad to read, but at least you have a diagnosis now for Cookie, and have a better idea on how to handle him. Poor old boy, but he's still got good life in him with you taking such good care of his every need (and want).
Enjoy all your time with Cookie and we look forward to celebrating his 15th birthday on July 12/21!! Loua will do a happy dance for Cookie on the same date of her 1st birthday, so that Cookie can relax and be spoiled by you .
