    Heavy sneezing with blood

I have an 11 y/o lab who has some hard sneezing and will sometimes sneeze some blood. The bleeding stops. It’s usually happens when he goes outside. The vet gave him an antibiotic, Benadryl, and told us to drop a little Visine on a little lesion at the end of his right nostril. We think it is from pawing at his mouth/nose. I am really concerned. At this age I am worried about everything. Has anyone had a problem with forceful sneezing? Would appreciate any help. Thank you.

No experience here. Did the vet give you any kind of actual diagnosis...even a guess? If he's pawing at his face, there's a reason. Maybe something inhaled/embedded inside (I'm thinking foxtail as a possibility). I wouldn't be comfortable thinking about just a small lesion at the tip. Good luck!

Benadryl is an antihistamine, not an antibiotic. I suspect you just got the words mixed up. It's often used for seasonal allergies which this could well be but it would be good to know if this is the Vet's thinking. Dogs usually react differently than humans do - we sneeze but dogs most often get itchy skin, but there's always an exception. I know myself I will sometimes spray blood when I sneeze or cough with a cold, I wonder if that could be it. Is the blood sprayed or does it drip? I think Barb's idea of possibly a foxtail is worth looking into.

Would agree it could be allergies since it only happens when he goes outside. I would also worry about a foxtail as our little Ginger actually had a blade of grass up her nose. What has your vet said about the lesion on the end of his nose, do you know what that is and what type of treatment has your vet suggested for that other then the visine?

I had the same thing happen with a chocolate boy I had a number of years ago. Noah started sneezing blood one morning, looked like a murder scene when he was done. I took him to the vet and they put him on steroids and antibiotics. A month or so after the meds stopped he had another episode. Back on the meds. During this time, his nose was constantly running/dripping clear mucus. This cycle went on for about 6 months when we discovered he had osteosarcomo. His left front leg went from being normal to grossly swollen in a matter of days. Mostly likely the cancer had been there for a while.

I would definitely talk to the vet about this possibility.

The vet gave him an antibiotic and said to give him Benadryl. We took him back to the vet today and they biopsied the lesion and also did head X-rays to see if there were any lesions showing but thankfully the X-rays were normal. Just have to wait for the pathology report to come back. Thank you for your response!

Thank you. We had him back at the vet today. The vet biopsied the lesion and X-rays were taken to see if there were any lesions in the sinuses, etc. Everything was normal. Just have to wait for the pathology report. So far, he only is sneezing when he goes out…so hopefully it is an allergy. I will also ask the vet about him possibly inhaling a piece of grass, etc.

Thanks for the update, and very happy it doesn't seem to be anything serious.
